Saffron came from the Yakima Reservation in Washington and was most likely dumped there by someone off the Reservation. Not an uncommon thing.

From what we've pieced together from her untreated pelvic fracture to when we know she was spotted eating the catfood a woman was putting out for the stray cats, somewhere between 1-3 months old Saffron most likely fell out of a pick-up truck or got hit by a car, lay in a ditch for about 2-3 weeks until the bones mended enough for her to stand, and somehow found her way to this woman's porch and the catfood. Sadly she spent another 3 months outside through the winter before the woman realized she didn't belong to her neighbor. As soon as she realized it, this sweet woman contacted Yakima Valley Pet Rescue and started fostering Saffron and introducing her to being an indoor dog.

A week later we met Saffron and took her back over the mountains with us. It's taken a lot of work, but she has come to realize how wonderful it is to be an indoor dog and just how much she is loved. We think we're the lucky ones.

My heart went out to Saffron's owners and to the lady who called the rescue group about this frightened and sickly pup. How lucky for Saffron to find such wonderful people that it makes you think this was her destiny.
Chayla Marie is a Rez dog and like all Rez dogs was treated poorly by everyone. She was chained to a fence and because she looked like a yellow lab and her puppies would be worth more money, they kept her pregnant so they could sell her pups for "beer" . We live in London,Ontario,Canada and our rescue group has done a lot of work on the reservations in our immediate area and all of our adoptive dogs come from there ,
so we know how cruel these first nation people can be to their animals. Would love to hear other good rescue stories.

I am from Garden Hill, Manitoba, Canada. It is a fly in reserve located above the 54th parallel. I found my mom walking home one night. I came up out of the ditch I was living in and walked up to her. She replied with a "hello little puppy" and gave me a pet.....But then she walked away..( She told me later that she did not want a dog because she could not save everyone .. she tried not to get attached to any) I was like WTF ? ( that is the way rez dogs sometimes talk)..... why is she walking away???? So I followed her home.. biting her ankles along the way. She opened the door to her house and she let me in. I was very sleepy but she gave me a bath...of which I was scared of because I think someone had tried to drown me. The bath helped the rash and fly bites that I had all over my belly.

Life was so good in her house I did not go outside again for 3 weeks!!! I knew this was a good place. ... so I figured out that paper training thing in 3 days. I know that I am part wolf, part husky, part German Shepherd. Those are the only kind of dogs around where I am from.

They do not treat animals very well where I am from. It is rumoured that they skin puppies alive, set them on fire or poke their eyes out. I was VERY lucky to found such a good mom. Mom told me one time after "dog shoot" in the community that we lived in for a year that she saw the band constables (aka police) dragging the dead dogs they had shot behind their truck to drop off at the dump. HORRIBLE!

I have to say life is really good. I have not been away from her for more than 2 weeks in our 7 years together.

I am Zowie's younger sister. Alot of people think we are blood related because we both have blue eyes. But that is not the case. Mom has told me my arrival story many times. I come from a reserve called Pimikimachamak First Nation located in Cross Lake, Manitoba, Canada. It is an isolated (but not fly in) reserve located above the 54th parallel also.
My mom moved there after living in Garden Hill for a year. ( See Zowie's story). Her and Zowie spent two years together before I arrived. Mom said she was NOT going to get another dog unless the dog was female and had blue eyes.. ( I guess that is me). My mom got a phone call one day from some teachers who had found me on their door step and were feeding me "All Bran" Cereal and peanut butter. The food wasn't very good but it was better than garbage. The called to see if mom wanted another dog because they knew she was an animal lover. Well mom came and saw me and saw how they were feeding me etc. and based on that she brought me home. She wasn't going to keep me.. She was going to take me to the no kill animal shelter when she got to the city at the end of June. She was worried about how my big sister would react too. Zowie is pretty aggressive around other ( bigger) dogs. But she did not really care that I was there because I was little. I loved her instantly, my big sister. I don't think she cared that I was around but soon realized that she could play with me. When my mom told grandma that I had come to stay. Grandma said that mom should name me. At this point I still thought I was going to go to the shelter. Mom named me Dixie ( I was going to be Chloe but that did not work). When the time came to go the city mom took me to meet Grandma... Grandma said "you are keeping this dog .. aren't you?" and mom said, "YES!"

Mom figures I was concieved during festival time of year when they have the sled races. She thinks I am maybe part greyhound because they do breed them with huskys to make them faster racers. I do not look like any dog on the reserve that I am from which is kinda neat. I actually look more like my sister than anyone else and even then not that much. If anyone asks mom what breed we are.. she replies with 100% pure bred bonehead. I think she says that because we are so goofy...

Kodi was found wandering around the South Mountain Reservation in NJ. He was in pretty good health when they found him at 8 months, except for his tail, which although being half gone was completely healed...so we know it wasn't an animal that got his tail....if I ever met his previous owners...ooohh boy...

But anyway, even after being found in the rez it is still his most favorite place to go for long walks!
