This is my first great dane puppy and she seems to be having pains in her back legs. I have followed all the right dieting for a dane. I do have a vet appointment next week. I was just wondering if anyone else went through this?

I think it is something that can happen to danes when they're young. I've read in a few places that puppies in the range of 4-7 months can get this random lameness. From what I remember it can just sort of appear and linger. But then it eventually goes away, leaving the dog none the worse for wear.

Heffner went through something sort of like this. It was his front left leg though. First I thought that he was just playing too hard at doggie day care. I gave him a few days off and then we went for a hike and it showed up again after that. He then got a week off and seemed fine, but any serious exertion would sort of bring it back. It wasn't anything horrible where he couldn't walk, he just limped. He went and saw the vet and she couldn't see anything really wrong with him. Because of all his romping it was just chalked up to a pulled muscle or something.

How's Jade doing? Did you find anything helpful out at the vet's?

Jade is doing great. The vet just said that sometimes they get that and it will go away. He also suggested giving her Vitamin C. She seems like she never had any pain. The dogs run around our property playing and chasing each other. They are so silly. Jade tries to jump on Tonka's back . I love these big goofy dogs.

So we woke up this morning and Jade wasn't doing good at all. She wouldn't get off the couch and she looked like she was in so much pain. We took her to the vet and she had a fever of 106. I was so worried. She was just laying there not moving or anything. The vet told me she was going through HOD and she was going to be ok. Its very scary. She seems to be better now. We are keeping a very close eye on her.

Oh my goodness! You guys must be so worried for her!! That's great though that the vet says that she'll be okay.

We're thinking about you guys!

Yes we were very worried. It was so scary. She was in so much pain and she didn't want to move. I couldn't help but shed some tears for her. In the vets office she was just laying on the floor, not moving and she seemed lifeless. The vet reasured me she wasn't going to die. She is doing much better now. She is actually running and playing with Tonka. Although she does seem like she is very tender in her joints. Thanks

Yeah, Moose went through the same thing when he was younger... all of a sudden he would be yelping and carrying one of his back legs like he stepped on something. Luckily, for over a year we haven't seen that, so I think it was the growing pains. Believe me, this dog moves like he hasn't a care or a pain in the world... that is until he bumps his head or smacks a corner with his rump.

this is a great thread, got a message that says it has been inactive for 626 days, but I can relate to it SO much! So far I have been fairly lucky with Brutus and Star, but they've bumped into things and acted like they were hurt before; only to be romping and frolicking around again 10 to 30 minutes later.
