Has anyone else noticed that the majority of training books and techniques are just not effective for Smooth Fox Terriers? It's certainly not a question of intelligence. When I've taken classes, the other dogs are still trying to figure out the clicker and my dogs are jumping through hoops and doing complicated moves. That is when they WANT to. The primary training technique of repeat, repeat, repeat is ineffective. Foxies get it on the first try, then get bored with any command that doesn't involve lots of moving like "sit, heel, down" etc. So far, the Cesar Millan program is the best I've found ("The Dog Whisperer") but still looking for something more breed-specific as I still believe this breed needs a very different kind of training approach.

Cesar's techniques have been amazingly helpful, but I definitely need more work with Frank. He'll do anything I ask him to inside...but outside, with other distractions, it's really hard to keep his attention. There's just so much going on. I can usually get him to do what I want for the tennis ball, but that doesn't quite make me the leader...

Hi Everyone, I am new to this SFT training. I agree that they are incredibly smart and do things the first time you ask, but they get bored so fast. And outside is a major distraction. Lily is just 11 months now and you really have to be the leader and let them know you are the boss, if you give them an inch... Oprah has a new trainer, that trains with love instead of aggression and she seems to have it right. The book is called "The loved dog. It works on the premise that your dog just wants to please you and get your affection. Check it out.
