Our Ares was misdiagnosed with Addison's disease and was given improper treatment at his vet because of it. As a result, he died from a combination of complications with the drugs they gave him as well as lack of treatment for what was really wrong with him.

The reference quoted in the original posting from Sachiko is on the website of the Akita Club of America. We have many other sites supporting this information:
A good one to send to your vet in support of the findings that Japanese breeds such as Akitas and Shiba Inu have this tendancy toward pseudohyperkalemia is the American Journal of Vetrinary Research. This is an abstract however your vet will be able to access the entire document to use as supporting evidence. The same type of supporting documentation for pseudohyperkalemia is the American Journal of Vetrinary Research. Again these are just supporting documentation.

This site is very thorough for a definition of Addison's Disease.

Pseudohyperkalemia in Akitas as published by PubMed: a service of the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

Potassium Levels in Japanese Dog Breeds sited from a diagnostic company called Antech. This site specifically is stating the proper handling of blood samples. The reason being that improper handling of blood samples will result in a misdiagnosis of Addison's Disease through pseudohyperkalemia.

Finally, this is another site with information about potasium and hyperkalemia . The page contains a section citing mishandling of blood samples resulting in a diagnosis of pseudohyperkalemia.

Let me point out that we only offer these links as a way for you all to educate your veterinary professionals. Ares was treated at two different clinics where none of the doctors were aware of these issues specific to Shiba Inu. As a result, they insisted upon giving him treatments that were in no way related to his condition. Ares was too young and his body too weak to withstand the treatments they gave him and his systems just shut down. Had we been better armed with this information, we might have been able to do more. We have done this little bit of research and presented it to you so that you don't have to go through a similar ordeal.

Please feel free to pass this along to others you know who might be affected by these circumstances. Also,. This is an abstract however your vet will be able to access the entire document to use as supporting evidence. The same type of supporting documentation for pseudohyperkalemia is the American Journal of Vetrinary Research. Again these are just supporting documentation.

We sincerely hope this helps someone out there.
