Hi there everyone, need some advice. We recently moved to a nice home. Our 2 year old Jack, was doing just fine until one day "something" scared him. We think it was a large, loud truck driving by while we were on a walk (there's more traffic in our new area).

Well, Buddy is a different dog now. We won't go out. When we say, "lets go for a walk" he literally runs and hides. When we finally get him out, he'll be fine until he hears any noise, a car door shutting, a car driving by, ANYTHING. Then we totally wigs out. He starts crying, DRAGGING us back to the house. It's unbelievable. We don't know what to do about it. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps you could try leaving hum out on a tie out for a half hour a day until he gets used to the traffic noises? Let me know how he is doing? Thanks!

Sometimes it just takes repetition. Keep walking and don't acknowledge the fear. Don't even let him pull you back. Keep the leash short and as much as you want to, resisit the urge to coddle him. If he knows you are ok with the noise, he will probably learn to accept it. It will take several walks to get him over his fear, but eventually he will adapt. I actually didn't walk when I first was leashed. Everything outside was scary. I sat down, but my mommy dragged my butt on pavement several times before I began to walk. I learned that pavement burn is much scarier than all the people and noises outside. Now I love to walk!

I recently saw a couple of episodes of Dog Whisperer about this same subject. Of course there were a couple of other little problems too.
But Cesar mainly got the dog (and the owner) to confront his fears, just long enough to let him know that the loud noises would not hurt him. It took some time, but it finally worked.
Maybe you can watch the show and hopefully they will aire it again soon. Hope this helps.

Well i use to have the same problem ( loud noises like cars screaching their tires, or any loud noise of any kind) I pulled so hard on my leash i was literally choking myself. My human mommy kept taking me out even though I gave her great resistence until one day we went to the park in a quieter area and i finally got over the ( Bad Walk) as I called it back then. She gave me treats when i first went out the door and again as we walked to and from the park. So i hope this helps and please don't give up.
