I need some advice from Brittany owners. Homer is a leash puller. And when I say pull, I mean my arm and shoulder need ibuprofen for 2 days after our agility class.
I've tried to train with the "tree method" and positive reinforcement, but he still pulls. He wants to sniff and get at everything during our agility class. I can't take him on a normal walk either, it's a pullfest. Any help?

I have to say that I'm the same way with my mom and dad. I just pull, pull, pull! I would be interested to see what suggestions the group comes up with. Don't worry though, we have alot of parents with great advice on how to handle us wild and crazy Britts!!!!

Love you all!

Apparently it is just to instinctive for us, as we are a very special hunting breed. My mommy lets me pull because she knows the smells and wildlife is just to overwhelming for me to listen. We do compromise on occassion. She lets me pull and "hunt" for a a few minutes, calling this okay to play but then I have to give her a few minutes back of "nice" or "better" walking. We switch off back and forth and this seems to work fairly good for a quick 15-20 minute walk.

I've heard my mom talk about the Halti collars and Promise leads. She likes them better than the pinch collars and choke chains (she calls them slip collars). My mom says that the Halti collars make the correction at the mouth, so if I start pulling she makes a light correction and my snout turns right and I know I've been pulling so I slow down.

Have you ever seen the Dog Whisperer? If not I highly suggest watching it either on TV (National Geographic Channel) or renting the DVD. After watching several episodes, I can say that my mom has learned how to correct me to become a great leash walker WITHOUT PULLING!! Although it did take quite a few walks and corrections before I quit pulling on her, she says I do a great job now of walking right beside her....and as my treat I get to sniff on the way back and she stops when I stop and walks when I walk, but we never have to pull on each other. Alot of it has to do with the position of my slip collar around the top part of my neck/base of my skull, and her correcting my focus and keeping me looking straight ahead while keeping the same pace as her...and if I start to lose focus, she quickly jerks the leash to correct it....Learn from the Dog Whisperer, this is the first thing he teaches any family w/ dogs! Hope this helps

Hi-I'm new to this but when I walk my mom she lets me "check it out" for a bit in the grass (if I don't eat stuff I find). Then when we walk on the hard paths I walk beside her more and she tells me how good I am. Every now and then I get to zig zag ahead and sniff but if she says "walk" in that mom voice I go back to her. I am working hard to train her to keep up with me. And if the stroller is in the walk too-well that you gotta walk beside, the baby likes to tell me secrets. I'm little but I'm learning. My mom said since I am a hunting dog at heart that the zig zag is how I would catch a scent and find a way to birds-so we have to live with it and make it part of our normal routine. And on our walk today I pointed out a Blue Bird and 3 Cardinals to mom-she told me I did good. Maybe she should get a camera and take pictures of my finds!

One more thing-how long should my mom walk me? We go for a 30 min+ walk every morning (mom is not a morning person, so this is tough for her). Then we have been finding places to go on extra walks for 30-45 minutes 2-3 times a week and I play on the dog trolley and bring tennis balls to mom. I am little right now (about 16 lbs) but how much walking should us Britts have? And when we get bigger do we need double the walk time? Someone told mom that Britts are hyper and need lots of walks, but I get tired and have to be carried if she goes too far (she doesn't add in all my zig zags as extra walk time). And when I rest, I rest-I can nap for hours if the baby lets me.

I used to pull on the leash too. If I saw a bird, or a 4-legged friend, or decomposing food, or smelled that I was close to home, oh boy would I pull! I thought it was fun at first but then my neck would get sore and I would start making these horrible gagging sounds. My mom just bought me a Gentle Leader Easy Walk harness. I've been wearing it on my walks for a few days now. The leash snaps to the front of the harness, which is at my chest. The other parts of the harness go under my belly and over my shoulders. When I pull or start veering towards a friendly dog, it's really easy for my humans to get my attention and move me in another direction. I overheard my mom say last night on our walk how much she likes the harness, and how I don't pull anymore. And, I like it because my neck feels better. I'm about 32 lbs and I wear a medium; it fits me well. I picked the blue harness; that's my favorite color!
