Police say a Chugiak man was cited for animal cruelty for shooting a moose on the afternoon of March 29. Rick Sinnott with the Department of Fish and Game says the moose was not seriously injured.

Police say 45-year-old Gary Lashbrook told authorities he shot the moose with a .44-caliber handgun because it appeared sick and needed to be put out of its misery.

But Sinnott says the moose did not look like it had to be put down. Police tracked a blood trail to the injured animal. Sinnott said the moose did not appear to be seriously injured.

Lashbrook also was cited for the unlawful discharge of a weapon for firing the gun in his back yard. Lashbrook's neighbors told police they heard multiple shots and saw the moose running from Lashbrook's yard.
