Am member need some help from us!

"Black -Standard Poodle

I am so confused. I am training a standard poodle for a SD for my son. Animal control is making it sound like I have to have a trainer train him. What is the deal in california do I have to get a trainer or can I do it myself? I am a single mom of many and can not afford a trainer. Can someone explain the laws to me."

If you ever need any help on any thing let us know or one of our heads.

Solution: Move to Oregon! I've met a few people around that train their own dogs here in Medford, we are at least a little more dog friendly up here, though we have a few of our own stupid laws; but Califonia takes the prize for having some of the dumbest laws when it comes to dogs. I am looking into training my danes to be assistance dogs, but after researching an answer for you I see now that the best course of action is to learn from someone whom has experience successfully training a service dog rather than ONLY doing it on my own.

Here is a webpage that has some good points about service dog training: http://sdog.danawheels.net/ot-adog.shtml

iaadp.org is the website address for: International Association of Service (Assistance) Dog Partners, which lists all the laws associated with assistance dogs.

Points to make about training own assitance dog that I found online:

"Advantages include:

Has the same access rights as any dog from a program.

Disadvantages:

1. The dog must be trained before it can be taken out into public. There is no such thing as the "MAGIC" dog. You have to train the dog.

2. If you're training a puppy, you must wait for it to finish growing before teaching tasks such as wheelchair pulling and bracing (Mobility Service (Assistance) Dogs Only)

A fair word of warning. It isn't easy to train your own Service (Assistance) Dog. If you never have trained a dog before, please look into a program trained dog, or the services of a dog trainer to help you. If, however, you've trained dogs before, AND know of a good dog trainer to help you, train your own dog and have fun doing it! "

i think as long as your dog can do all the tasks you train it to do, that calif cant really do anything. i mean with all the cutbacks and etc that they are having... i think the main thing is that they want you have your dog tested by a certified trainer etc. so by that you would be able to do that criteria. handi dogs inc in tucson arizona they do train dogs but they also say that its all about if your dog can do the tasks. and they give you the list of criteria the dog has to pass. so i would get a copy of the list of criteria that the dog must pass ie sit stay for 5 mins, etc.. that way you have something to work towards.

Hi there. I didn't know that you are able to train your own dog to be a service dog until this past year. Binx had been with me since he was a baby and we are very close. I learned a ton researching online about all of this, granted I still am learning!

Anyway, here is a link to one of the tons of sites out there with the laws and this one is for California! I always keep a copy of the state and federal laws in Binx's vest. Good luck!

u are alowed to train your own service animal. Now this may be the catch. it says "Your Own Animal", not anothers animal. So not knowing what your sons needs and abilities are I am at a loss to really say what you should do. I should think that You and your son should be ableto train the dog, with no problem, and I should think that as long as your son is with you at all time the animal is in public you should be OK. You don't have to wait untill the dog is fully trained to take him out in public. How is he saposed to learn if he can't go out.
I am training my own Dog and as her trainer I can take hr anywhere I go, with no exception. You need to hace buisness cards made up with the Dogs information and license Information, and on the back print the Rules showen in the regulations, so those who question you will know what they can and canot ask you. If the Question you Show or give them the card. once they ask you if the dog is a service animal they can not ask you more once you answer. If they question your responce, they have to file a formal complaint thru animal control, and only they can make the decission . You need to file the paperwork with you local county Animal control. No here is where it gets crazy. I found that there are a number of people in the organization that have know Idea of what is going on, so keep trying and keep calling untill you get the help you need.
In Rivrside County the ladies name is Mona, at the dept. of Animal Services. the Phone No. is 951-358-7387
Just remember, Falsifying the paperwork just so you can take you pooch with you carries a pritty stiff fine...
Good luck. and I also suggest getting some good books on training to help you out.

Thank you all for your replys. I have contacted animal control which is through the Sheriffs dept. and talked to or left messages 8xs. I am getting tired of this. I have a dr. note that I copied small and laminated to carry with me about my sons need for a service dog. This is a small town and they do not have the taggs we need. I figure that when they finally get me the application I will put down my name as trainer. I heard of someone doing this for her husband before. I bought teamwork one and two and another dog training book. I have trained dogs in the past with sucess for a high trained pet. thank you again for your responses
