Mom thought of another tip. She received a notice that her subscription to Readers Digest was about to expire; the price on the renewal form was $29 for one year. Mom went to the Magazine Store from the Humane Society of the United States website. She renewed her subscription for $19 for *two* years! That's $10 less than she would have paid for just one year - and part of the money goes to the HSUS to help animals. Talk about a win/win situation! They have scads and scads of magazines, so if your mom or dad wants to start or renew a subscription - have them check it out. way to go

Use vinegar and baking soda instead of cleaners. Vinegar (diluted with the same amount of water) works for glass, as an "all-purpose" cleaner, and (full strength) in toilets and for cleaning the litter box. Baking soda is good for deodorizing stuff (sprinkle it on, let it sit, vacuum it up), mixed with a small amount of water as a Soft Scrub type cleaner, for glass and ceramic cooktops on stoves, to get off soap scum and hard water spots...lots and lots of uses. There's really no cleaner that I can think of that vinegar/baking soda can't replace. I own a housecleaning business and I only use vinegar/baking soda in all of my client's houses. It's cheap and green at the same time!

Oh, another good use for baking soda that saves a ton of money: put an inch of it in the bottom of the litter box. Seriously, we get cheap clumping litter from Aldi (that's a wonderful supermarket all-around...if you are lucky enough to have one near you), 14 lbs for $3.69. We clean the boxes with full strength vinegar, pour some baking soda on top of the vinegar, let it fizz, wipe any residual nasties out (the little clumps that stick to the sides...eww), dry them, and refill with an inch of baking soda and the cheap litter. We have three cats and no smell. No reason to buy fancy "cat litter deodorizer" or expensive litter.

Have fun saving!

Meowmy buys our clumping litter at Bj's wholsesale for $8.99 for 40 lbs! It's our favorite! She bought us sifting cat litter boxes that allowes her to stretch the litter. If you have a Costco membership you can get 40 lbs of litter, clumping or clay, for about $10-12. Before meowmy had a membership at Bj's, she would stock up on it when her aunt would go. They also occasionally have Bj's coupons for pet products. Meowmy is a coupon fanatic! One time, she got us a bag of kitty treats for 9 cents! And her mommy saves those coupons for us too!

Meowmy just bought me a bog of Advantage from PetcareRx.com. Free shipping and they gave us $5 off the purchase and a scratch off for a certain percentage off the next order plus $5 off the next order. Jake's revolution is the same price at the vet.

Meowmy also has the discount cards for the pet stores and stocks up majorly when they have our food and toys on sale. Meowmy refuses to pay full price for anything MOL!

Emily,we just had an Aldi's store open near us recently. Save-a-lot is similar. Between them we get all of our groceries for a lot less than than the big stores(Publix,Winn Dixie & Albertsons here in Fl.)!

Good idea about baking soda,Emily! Our Dad works in construction,& there was an apartment complex he was working at that was made of wood(not a good idea in Hurricane Alley, but that's beside the point),it was rained repeatedly upon & had a mold problem. Guess what they treated the buildings with to get rid of the mold? Big bags of Baking Soda! No brand names, but it had an arm & a hammer on the bags. I'm not saying that baking soda will get rid of mold, but that's what they used.....shrug

Wow Cali!!! Baking soda??? We live in Georgia which is like the mold capital of the south....at least in the summertime. Our yard has LOTS of trees, so the driveway is like always growing stuffs on it, and the garage/basement gets smelly too sometimes from the molds---yech!!! Mom already gets the great big boxes of baking soda to use for other stuff around the house (like putting some in the washer machine between loads acuz THAT gets smelly in the summertime, and in the litterbox, and for scrubbing stuffs). She is gonna give it a try downstairs!! Woohoo!!! Happy happy if it makes the stinks gone!!!

It won't do anything for you - but you might win some cool stuff for us cats if you get the Moderncat newsletter.
We get it - and we've never won anything, but like looking at the cool designs. I keep thinking if we were handier, we could build some of these ourselves...
