Hey everypup,

***SHARE-A-TIP and win something special*** Everyone who participates wins something.

Tell us what your family does that helps to lessen your carbon footprint such as conserving natural resources, creating less garbage or saving energy in your household. (or something along those lines that I forgot to mention here)

I'll start: We like to use pencils when ever possible instead of pens. It saves on the amount of plastic that gets thrown into the environment and the pencils last much longer to write with than pens.

We send e-cards. You can find many of them free online. It sure beats going to the store, spending gas and time to pick out the right card, getting stamps and then hoping the card doesn't get lost in the mail. E-cards save time and money - not to mention trees. A lot of the e-card sites have a need option that will tell you when the card was picked up by your recipient.

Like most forms of paper, greeting cards impact the environment adversely both during their disposal and production alike, initially consuming virgin resources (trees, water, fuel) before ending up in landfills as part of the approximately 83 million tons of paper waste generated by Americans each year. http://www.greenyour.com/lifestyle/events/greeting-cards

Yikes!! We want to be part of the solution - not the problem. I say e-cards all the way!! http://www.bluemountain.com/ has a 14 day trial membership to send awesome e-cards from Blue Mountain first and see if you like it. We just started our trial membership and will def keep it. I think it is only $15.99 per year. That is a huge savings when you don't have to worry about gas, stamps and the environment!!

"American children and adolescents spend 22 to 28 hours per week viewing television, more than any other activity except sleeping. By the age of 70 they will have spent 7 to 10 years of their lives watching TV." -- The Kaiser Family Foundation

Mum has decided to wean herself off of TV watching. She initially did this to save on the electric bill and to lessen her footprint on the environment but she is seeing that TV watching isn't all that great for a person. She is down to 45 min - 1 hour of programming a day and has decided to watch 1 DVD or Tivo'ed movie of her choice per week. This is a big change from the 2 to 4 hours she used to watch EACH DAY. Once she is done watching the series finale of her final show in a month or two, she says that's it and won't watch TV anymore but will just watch one DVD'd movie per week.

She is trying to talk Dadee into quiting DirecTv, but he won't hear of it. frown We don't know why when he rarely watches 1 -2 hours a week himself. Well pups, keep your fingers crossed. We are on the lowest DTv plan, but we would save about $500 a year by getting rid of it.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't been here in awhile but Mommy was real busy with work and now they are taking me to a lotta dog fairs and walkathons to help shelter doggies like I was.

Well, you know I'm still refusin' to go veg. I can still spit those veg kibbles pretty far but I did eat two carrots the other day and that made Mommy happy.

But Mommy and Daddy are being really good vegans. Mommy cleaned out her closet last week (she lost 80 lbs) and gave away 7 big bags of clothes to charity. She got all new manmade shoes and got rid of any leather ones.

Mommy and Daddy bought a water bottle to cut down on plastic ones and Mommy's got her eye on some glass containers for leftovers.

Oh, and Mommy makes her students get all their notes and tests and articles to read online so she doesn't waste paper making copies.

Love to all,
Benny

Benny,

Thanks for posting and welcome back. We've missed you.

Those are some great tips! I especially like the not wasting paper one because we need all the trees we can get! Good for your mom.

Everyone, feel free to post as many tips as you like. And come back often and post more so we can pass these tips on and learn from one another.

We buy Hemp collars and leashes instead of Nylon ones. When we manufacture Nylon, we produce lots of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) which is an ozone depleting greenhouse gas.

Luckily there are lots of eco-friendly leashes and collars on the market now that are durable enough to withstand doggie-wear. We buy ours from Planet Dog which we can find in most specialty dog stores now.

The only cons to them that we've found is that they 'give' with wear, so they eventually become loose around the neck. That, and it's difficult to get those doggie-smells out of them, even with multiple washings... though we had the same problem with our nylon ones. BOL, maybe I'm just a stinky dog laugh out loud wink

oh my gosh mom just posted a blog post on this! here are some stuff she mentioned:

Green Ideas

Don’t use oven to cook things (raw food!)
Keep fridge full
Use biodegradeable doggie-poop bags and eco-friendly cat litter
Don’t buy bottled water, use a sigg container
Use glass to store food instead of plastic
Compost! And I educated others about compost at school
Bought thrift-store sunglasses (since I lose mine like crazy)
Buy mostly organic and support local as often as possible (eat lots of local greens, berries, apples, hazelnuts)
Don't eat any animal products (which are a huge tax on the environment and resources)
Share a car with husband; use car sparingly

mom threatened to not buy us any more toys, to only use sticks and stuff. :-( in the past she has bought used stuffed animals with any plastic parts taken off. earth-friendly and pocket-book friendly.
