Today I received a form letter from my internist saying that she is withdrawing as my primary care physician. She said she will provide urgent medical services for 30 days but not after that. What the h@ll? Why would a doctor do that? She's been my doctor since 2004! We've always gotten along and I have recommended her to many MANY people. She doesn't (or didn't...don't know now) have a "God complex". The only reason I could think for a doctor firing a patient would be for failure to pay bills but I has ALWAYS paid her on time. Her letter referred me to her office manager if I had any questions. I am not going through her office manager, and have written her a letter requesting an explanation in writing. A doctor-patient relationship is both invaluable and personal and it hurts to feel rejected via form letter.

I called today and they said that the doctor feels that she's not able to do anything for further for me, she has nothing else to offer.

It doesn't make sense to me at all. She wasn't treating me for my disability. She did write the script for Harley and do that paperwork because it was obvious I had a disability before we knew what it was. But once I got a diagnosis, I got a specialist.

She was basically the one who wrote the referrals to another doc and saw me for the "normal" stuff that I didn't need a specialist for.

I don't know and it doesn't much matter.

I have to find a new primary care physician because I have to have one for insurance stuff.

Here is my response:

Dr. Aultman:

After great thought and deliberation, I find it necessary to respond to your letter in writing. While I understand that the doctor-patient relationship is a professional one, the relationship between a patient and their primary care physician is both personal and intimate. I also understand that my medical condition is complex and that you no longer feel competent to continue as my primary care physician.

However, to send me such a harshly worded form letter after five years of serving as my doctor is impersonal, unprofessional, and highly inappropriate. Though not directly stated, the letter also implies wrong doing on my part, and if placed in my record, could make any future doctor hesitant to treat me. It also offers no explanation. I find the explanation offered by your office manager inadequate and suspect that there is an underlying situation that I am not aware of, especially since my last appointment with you was seven weeks ago and at no point did you give any indication that you felt unable to continue providing my care.

Since the decision to sever this relationship was yours and without provocation, I am requesting a copy of my complete record be mailed to me at no cost. I will contact your office when I have located another primary care physician to have my record forwarded to them. I would also appreciate a complete and honest explanation as to why you decided to withdraw as my primary care physician.

I got a large envelope with my medical records. There was not a copy of the letter in it. There was also not an explanation nor was there any hint in the doctors notes as to what the cause was. I guess I will never know.

I do have an apt to "interview" a new internist on the 28th.

Phooy, you know, if your doctor can't tell you why they don't want to be your doctor anymore, you need a new doctor anyway! A good doctor is always honest with you. I hope you get a better doctor.

I agree, it sounds like maybe you need a new one anyways. It would have been nice though, if you could've figured out why. Who knows. A least you have yor medica records. I didn't even get that fro my doctor. Granted, he didn't "fire"my, he just up and left. Someone told me (more than one somene, atually)that the only way to get my files is to sue him. I don't want to do that, but I need my files...
