Spices can really kick up the appeal of home cooked meals. I've been know to refuse food that wasn't seasoned to my liking. In addition to the wonderful aroma, spices may also offer anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and other nifty benefits. The following spices are ones we like to use - maybe there is something here you'll like, too!

- Cinnamon may ease allergies, relive pain, fight bacteria and fugi, reduce gas, and help relax muscles. Early research suggests it may also be useful in maintaining blood sugar levels.
- Clove contains eugenol, which is a phytochemicl that anesthetizes (which is why your tongue might feel numb if you eat a lot), kills bacteria, fights free-radical oxidation, and thins the blood. If you choose to add whole cloves to food, make sure you pick 'em out before mealtime.
- Fennel is great for digestion, coughs, and reducing inflammation of mucous membranes.
- Ginger is well know for being great for digestion and relieving queasiness. It also contains anti-inflammatories that may help arthritis suffers be more comfortable.
- Turmeric is fabulous fabulous fabulous! This is paws down the best natural anti-inflammatory we've found and does a bang up job on arthritis when grouped with other natural remedies. It's also great for liver support and may be useful in canine cognitive disorder (similar to dementia or Alzheimer's in people).

Good stuff, Angus, ol' pal!

Got anything to relieve CBS? That's Cranky Brother Syndrome.. laugh out loud

Mom used Turmeric with Ben towards the end.. She just added it to his chicken or fish.. Mom says it tastes (and cooks) similar to saffron.

Turmeric is very good with Indian food, but most of us probably don't get that much Butter Chicken. I think it's pretty tasty with all kinds of meat and many veggies. It does have a unique flavor that not everyone digs, but it is also available as a nutritional supplement in capsule form.

CBS? Have you tried astragalus?

This is very interesting -
I am battling allergies and recurring yeast infections. I am currently on a restricted food diet to try and pinpoint what I am allergic too, but am almost at the end of it. (and I will be so glad!)
Do you know if the Cinnamon would help with the yeast and does it help with allergy symptoms or what? Would mom just sprinkle it on my dinner? I only weigh 5 lbs - any idea how much would be right for me?
Thanks so much for your help.
PS - we think I am allergic to mostly grains like oatmeal and possibly Chicken - although I am hoping, hoping, hoping not chicken cause I love it!

Cinnamon's aid for allergic response is not a primary feature and we wouldn't recommend that anyone start using it just for that. If you like the taste of it it happens to be good at a few other things.

In most cases Mom recommends quercitin for calming allergic response during an elimination diet. It is important to remember than when following an elimination diet that you still want to have some symptoms of an allergic response (otherwise it will be difficult to tell whether you have a reaction). An alternative supplement for calming allergies is stinging nettle. Both come in capsule form at most natural health stores. Side effects may result from an overdose (and include the ususal things like runny poo); for most products a quarter of a capsule would be a good starting point for you, Molly.

Other natural products know to help with allergies include vitamin C, honey, zinc, and essential fatty acids (EFAs). Although not a popular technique, Mom's had success in helping dogs overcome allergies when using a detox to help along the elimination diet.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Thank you Angus.
We are having a hard time figuring out what I'm reacting too - but we think it's chicken. cry and of course I love chicken.
So no more chicken and we'll try something else for a little while and see how I do with that.
We also are switching to all natural cleaners and soaps with no perfumes or dyes and that seems to help me a lot too. And we hope we have my yeast infection cleared up - that makes a huge difference as well.
We'll keep working at it smile
