“The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.”
II Samuel 23:2 (NIV)

When Ellie, a new coworker at the bookstore, told me that she used to be a counselor before she got laid off because of budget cuts, I patted her hand in sympathy. “This retail job must be a real comedown for you,” I commented. If I’d expected her to agree with me, I was in for a surprise.

“Oh no,” she said. “I come in contact with more hurting people in a day here than I did in my old job in a week.”

“How on earth do you know that?” I asked. Most of the customers I met seemed confident and pulled together.

“Why, just yesterday,” she said, “a lady came in looking for a book on divorce.”

I remembered the woman vividly. She’d looked annoyed, I thought, so I’d passed her on to Ellie.

“Well, anyone looking for a book on divorce or grieving is obviously looking for help,” I admitted, “but you make it sound like everyone can use help.”

“I think that many of them can,” Ellie said. “Do you remember that tall man who wanted a book on finances?”

I did remember him. He’d seemed so snappish that I’d kept right on shelving books while I let Ellie help him.

“He was facing bankruptcy,” she said quietly. At my astonished look she said, “As I walk them to the right shelf, I try to say a kind word and then I listen carefully. And I ask God to help me say the right thing.”

So I tried it. A man wanted a book on “neighbor law,” and when he poured out his frustration about the child with a drum set who’d moved in above him, I briefly poured out my sympathy . . . and left both of us with a smile on our faces, for a change.

God, help me to help someone with a kind word or an understanding ear today.

Recognizing What Battles to Fight

Not every battle is worth fighting. Many of the challenges that come our way are simply distractions trying to lure us from our destiny.

When we have opportunities to get upset - maybe somebody is talking about us, or a competitor at work is spreading rumors, or our spouse says something that they shouldn't have - we ought to stop and ask ourselves, "If I engage in this battle and spend my time and energy trying to straighten somebody out, defending myself, arguing with them, trying to prove that I'm right... even if I win this battle, what is the prize going to be? What is this fight going to accomplish? Anything truly worthwhile?"

You see, there are a lot of battles that come across our lives each day, but they simply aren't worth the fight because the end result is strife and disharmony.

Granted, there are some that ARE worth fighting. Defending moral convictions, standing up for the weak, protecting the innocent - you know the things that are in that category.

But Proverbs 20:3 says, "Avoiding a fight is mark of honor." Read that again. It is referring to fights that are pointless and only reduce your worth in the eyes of others as you stoop to that kind of lower level.

If you want to honor God and enjoy your life, decide to be a peacemaker. Make it a guiding principle of your life to be the kind of person that will avoid an unnecessary fight.

If you'll be disciplined to fight the battles that do matter, and take the focus off of those that are less important, not only will your relationships be better and your home full of peace, but God will bless you because He honors those who are known as persons of peace and unity.

Whoever pursues godliness and unfailing love will find life, godliness, and honor.
Choose a good reputation over great riches, for being held in high esteem is better than having silver or gold.

Proverbs 21:21 ; 22: 1

Choosing Gods path leads to true riches which cannot be tarnished or stolen.

The Seed

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time
to choose a successor to take over the business.

Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided
to do something different. He called all the young executives in his
company together.

He said, 'It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO.
I have decided to choose one of you 'The young executives were
Shocked, but the boss continued. 'I am going to give each one
of you a SEED today - one very special SEED. I want you to plant
the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with
what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then
judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be
the next CEO.'

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others,
received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the
story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted
the seed. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had
grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began
to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.

Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have
a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he
had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but
he had nothing.. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however.
He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the
seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company
brought their plants to the CEO for inspection.

Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot.
But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick
to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment
of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot
to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety
of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful --
in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and
many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young
executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. 'My, what great plants, trees,
and flowers you have grown,' said the CEO. 'Today one of you will
be appointed the next CEO!'

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with
his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to
the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, 'The CEO knows I'm a
failure! Maybe he will have me fired!'

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened
to his seed - Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim,
and then announced to the young executives, 'Behold your next
Chief Executive Officer!

His name is Jim!' Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow
his seed.

'How could he be the new CEO?' the others said.

Then the CEO said, 'One year ago today, I gave everyone in this
room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it,
and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds;
they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and
flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you
substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the
only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with
my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new
Chief Executive Officer!'

* If you plant honesty, you will reap trust

* If you plant goodness, you will reap friends

* If you plant humility, you will reap greatness

* If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment

* If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective

* If you plant hard work, you will reap success

* If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation

* If you plant faith in God , you will reap a harvest

So, be careful what you plant now;
it will determine what you will reap later.

I Let Them Go
==============

For the past year and a half, I have been experiencing many
problems in a long term relationship.

It made me unhappy and even physically sick most of that year
and a half since I didn't want to see this relationship end.
I prayed that things would get better on a daily basis and it
grew worse. One night I finally said to God, "I can't handle
this any more, I am putting it in your hands, please show me
what to do."

The next morning I clicked on a bookmark by accident and it
popped up with a list of sermons. The first one was titled,
"Let them go." I listened to the sermon and it was as if God
was speaking directly to me.

Most people will think this is crazy, but I felt goose bumps go
up and down my arm. I thought all day about it and then when I
awoke this morning I had no pain in the stomach, no overwhelming
feeling of dread and no fear of loss.

I realized how unhappy this relationship was making me and that
I was trying to save something that was already gone. Of course,
some of those old feelings filtered back into my mind on the
drive to work. Then this morning I opened up my MountainWings
and the last three words were "Let it go."

I think my prayers have been answered.

" Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth....."
Matthew 5:13

Years ago I looked for away to serve God on the front line. Some people told me the main thing was sharing the good news. Others said the best witness was to do things like visiting prisoners and feeding the hungry.
Wanting to discover God's will for me , I dove into the Bible.
I was stunned to read that Jesus told His disciples to consider themselves blessed when "you're at the end of your rope," when "you've lost what is dear " (Matthew 5:3-4 ) , as if these tragedies were actually God's delivery vehicles for sending us His blessings.
Ridiculous! I'd already lost a lot and had been at the end of my rope!
"Lord," I finally said, "just tell me straight: What good news do I have to share? Why am I here?"
My eye caught Jesus' next sentence: " Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God- flavors of this earth."
My world changed. Maybe the best news I could bring was this: As I surrender my life to the Lord, He offers me the courage, honesty and willingness to face and walk through the most difficult problems with my eyes wide open! And for me, that's very good news.

LORD, YOUR BLESSINGS ARE GOOD NEWS INDEED WHEN IT COMES TO SPIRITUAL MATURITY, EVEN IF THEY SOMETIMES FEEL A LITTLE LIKE SANDPAPER. AMEN.

For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me. . . .
Psalm 27hi5 (NAS)

Gracie, the kitten who had been abandoned at our door when she weighed less than two pounds, had grown into a big, strong, beautiful cat, sleek with large amber eyes. But Gracie’s little heart seemed to remain small, untrusting and afraid. The slightest noise or movement frightened her. She slept with my husband Gene and me, and would sit calmly with us in the evening. On her brave days she’d hop up on the kitchen counter when I was cooking.

Then my son Jeremy came to live with us for a few months. Gracie couldn’t adjust. She fled each time he entered the room. When he left his shoes in the living room, she’d flatten her ears and creep away to hide.

I knew her hiding place—my bedroom closet. Often I’d follow her there and find her on a shelf, mostly hidden by hanging clothes, nestled down in a pair of my pajamas. Her bright eyes seemed to say, I’m okay now. All is well. I’m safe in here.

As I sat on the floor, talking softly to her one day, listening to her contented purr, I thought, Gracie has a hiding place—a safe place to run to. Always.

And so do you, Marion, came another thought. So do you. I am your hiding place. Always.

“I’m hiding in thee. Hiding in thee, hiding in thee, thou blest Rock of Ages” (William O. Cushing, 1823–1902).

Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:13

This is one of the greatest of all techniques of mental health. It teaches that when we have done all that we can do about a given matter, we are not to get worried or in a panic or be filled with anxiety, but take a calm philosophical attitude concerning it.
When you have done all that you can do, don’t try to do any more, just “stand.” Relax, stop. Be quiet, don’t fuss about it; you have done everything possible. Leave the results to God.

Reaching For The Stars
=======================

I came to realize one day a thing in life that we all often take
for granted.

We reach for the stars because they are so beautiful and they
are something we want so bad.

Yet we also have a beautiful flower on our table picked from our
flower garden that we can have and we push it aside unnoticed.

Life is also like that.

We want something we can't have like the stars, but what we can
have like the flower, we don't even acknowledge.

Take time to enjoy the flowers that you have instead of trying
to touch the stars that you can't reach.

Stars are beautiful like other things in life but they were
never meant for us to have.

This is a lesson from God to me as what my priorities should be.

Be thankful for the things we have because we may lose them
someday and we will know how much we should have treasured them.
