Hang in there with Bindi...

I just wanted to weigh in on the spay/anaesthetic issue. Sighthounds can react poorly to injectable barbituates because they have a very low percentage of body fat. Most malinois also are on the lean side, but not the extreme of a sighthound. As well, most up to date vet clinics are not using injectable barbituates for anaesthesia anymore, usually propofol or ketamine/valium plus a gas anaesthetic, which should be perfectly safe for a Malinois.

The results are in. Her titers were really good, her T4 could have been a bit higher but they weren't out of normal. Dr. Dodds advised having her rechecked in a couple months to see if that T4 comes up. It may have been because she was in heat a couple months ago. So normal thyroid.

Bindi's finally settling down after the visit.

I haven't started the Clomicalm yet. Decided I wanted to wait and talk to my regular vet first. I talked to her today and we discussed Bindi's behavior, the behavior mod. plan we've been doing, triggers etc. She also agreed something may have happened at that boarding kennel with Bindi reacting to the male body type that guy had. (I used to admire that guy, new information is surfacing that makes me really question him)

She was honest saying she's not very familiar with the drugs but she has prescribed clomicalm a few times. She listened to my concerns, Clomicalm seems to have a larger list of side effects than Prozac and is more sedating. She agreed, using the little information she had. She asked if I could give her a few days to do more research. Of course I agreed. So she's going to do some research, call me in a few days and we'll discuss what the best options would be.

She applauded me for the work we've done so far, saying most people want the drug but don't want to do behavior mod. with it.

We also discussed spaying, she wants to see the information I've found, and said they do have greyhound protocols. So we'll be looking at both and coming up with a plan there. I'm guessing the drugs we'll use will be what Becky mentioned.

She was also very excited to hear that Bindi is maintaining at 53 pounds. She knows of the battle I've had with Bindi gaining weight.

This is why I love our vet. It took going through quite a few to find her, I don't know what I'll do if she decided to leave that practice.
