Hi everyone smile

A few months ago Gunner was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT), where his immune system actually destroys his platelet counts. It came on so suddenly. I noticed one day he was peeing blood and figure it was a bladder infection. Boy I didn't think that a few paychecks later that this is what I'd have on my hands! laugh out loud

Thankfully Gunner recovered wonderfully and hasn't had any episodes lately. It was so horrible to see the huge purple blotches underneathe his skin. He was medicated with prednisone (did I spell that right?), but I noticed that he did lose a little hair. Is that normal with this drug? I'm not familiar with it.

Anyways, I was told by my vet that this is a rare disease and it's nice to talk with other people who have incountered it. hug

HI Gunner, I also recently developed this disease. I am so glad you have recovered..I am still recovering and hope that my platelets are back to normal soon. It is very scary and I am not feeling well at all. I haven't lost any hair (yet) and I am still very tired...are you weaning off the steroids or still taking the same amount?
Mom is worried that my eyes are bulging a little bit and I seem to have lost my voice....crycrycry

I no longer take my steroids anymore. Hopefully the issue won't flare up again if I get stressed out or anything like that. I was on prednisone and I read that hairloss was common with taking that type of steroid for awhile. My hair is starting to grow back.

We are praying hard over in our neck of the woods for your safe and speedy recovery Tika!

Thank you Gunner..we have another appointment this week for a blood test. Can you keep your paws crossed that it is at least 100,000 this time!

I am glad you are better! We are worried about stress now...this happened when I was at the groomers...will it happen again?

Hi Gunner. Yes, hair loss is very common with Prednisone. Willow has lost a TON of hair--she's down to skin on her sides and back legs. And, she's a pure chow so you can imagine how much she lost. We are hoping it will grow back. But, in the grand scheme of things it's minor and as long as she is healthy we can have fun buying coats for her!

Tika-Our vet didn't recommend us going back to grooming and also being around other dogs isn't the best idea anyway while on Prednisone. The immune system is wiped out and she could pick up any little thing from other dogs.

Thanks Willow...were you told to not get any extra water or food? Our vet didn't say and I am hearing different things.
Tika is going for another blood test tomorrow so I can ask then as well.hug

Baby carrots are great to help with the extra hunger and without adding weight in the long run.

Avoiding other dogs is important. Your immune system is compromised and makes you a high risk for other diseases.

wave Well had the blood test and we hope to get results today sometime. The dogtor said that I was doing pretty good and he might put me on a different medication as well as the Prednisone.
He said I need good quality protein right now to help my bone marrow make new cells. Mom has been boiling chicken breasts for me and I love them. No bones fat or skin. I also eat my Go natural dry food but not as much cause my mouth is a little sore.
He said not to restrict my food or water intake right now. I am still sleeping and sleeping but I seem to be getting stronger. Mom has her fingers crossed!
Baby carrots! Thanks Cherry!hug

Happy New Year!

Tika's latest blood test is up! She is at 100,000!snoopy We were told we can cut the Prednisone down and slowly wean her off it. She goes back in three weeks.
Is there anything we should be aware of in reducing the dose?
