Toronto, August 23, 2006: The Attorney General for Ontario announced last night that in view of the success of the province's ban on pit bulls the government is turning its attention to another very popular breed of dog.

He made the following announcement at a press conference late yesterday: "These dogs are involved in more biting and mauling incidents than any other breed in Ontario. Every time I read a news report about a dangerous dog, it involves a Lab or a Lab cross. We had another incident today in Waterloo involving Labs attacking people on the street. Enough is enough. It's time to take a long, hard look at these dogs."

When questioned about the advisability of bringing the issue before the public in an election year, the Attorney General said: "The public wants to be protected from dangerous dogs. The public supported the pit bull ban because they knew it was time to get dangerous dogs off our streets and out of our parks and backyards. The precedent has been set, our ban is working and it's time to look at other types of dogs involved in large numbers of bites and attacks."

As to whether it would be put to a vote in the Legislature or if public hearings would be held as they were for the pit bull ban, the response was: "We went through a vote, we had public hearings and we remained convinced that banning pit bulls was the right thing to do. The law allows the government to add any breeds or mixed breeds to its list of prohibited dogs without consultation. Municipalities have that authority as well."

The Opposition Critic could not be reached for comment. The NDP Attorney General Critic had this to say:

"I don't know why anyone would be surprised by this announcement. The Attorney General has already proven he is capable of banning dogs because of their breed. Labs are one of the most popular dogs in the province, why wouldn't they be next? More dogs, more bites - it isn't rocket science".

Asked if he thought adding another breed to the ban would protect the public, he replied "I don't know about the public. I think this is more about protecting the Attorney General's seat."

This is crazy! First they ban my breed, now Labs.
Why don't they just admit they are dog haters in Ontario.
Is there anything that can be done to protect the Labs in Ontario and across the US.

I sure hope so, Dutchess! Of all breeds to ban, Labs? That's Crazy! Labs are so commonly used for therapy and seeing-eye dogs! I sure hope something get's done to stop this madness!

Might as well just ban dogs all together! Any dog can bite and draw blood! My spokeshooman knows a chihuahua who has caused injuries that require stitches. Ya never know! Cats scratch and bite, too, so ban them. Staplers and scissors, so injurious! Might as well remove all the hazards from society so everyone makes it through life unscathed and unfrightened.

Sorry, normally don't resort to sarcasm to dispute some jerk's claim. I see something really wrong with this thinking. Because once you get rid of all the labs, by default some other breed will be at the top for most bites and maulings. Then what?

You are very right Parker! May as well have GBL- Gun Specific Legislation. Guns cause A LOT of injuries! After a while most dog breeds will be banned, because all dogs bite, all dogs scratch. BSL is such a horrible thing, I say we Ban Stupid Legislators!

Maybe humans should just walk around with crash helmets and bubble wrap, start building thing out of foam. laugh out loud

It bothers me that humans are responsible for the very existence of the multitude of dog breeds, but they can't take collective responsibility for making some dogs big and strong! And then act as if some breeds are inherently evil or something.

Hi Pepper, Duchess and Parker! wavewavewave

I totally agree with you all about this nonsense. Banning labs? How ludicrous! As we say here, there are no bad breeds, just bad owners. Right Pepper? Duchess, I don't agree with the banning of Pit Bulls either, some people can be so ignorant when it comes to dogs.

My hu-aunt has a black lab and he is very submissive, not a mean bone in his body.
Hmm- I got an idea! Why don't we just ban all the humans that want to ban us dogs? Sounds like a plan to me! way to go wink

wave Hi everyone! You're funny, Rowdy!

My spokes-hooman was doing a Santa Paws event last weekend when she met an eleven-year-old black lab named Speak (an allusion to The Tick, if you remember that awesome cartoon/comic). Yeah, he was big, and a great big baby!!! He wouldn't stop crying for the picture until his mom gave his plushy toy bone back, so he got his picture taken with it in his mouth. He looked so happy!! Spokes-hooman asked if it was his old favorite, and his mom said he had just picked it up in the pet store they were doing Santa Paws at! Then everyone was petting him and he was eating it up! A lot of animals came in that day, but he was the one with the most character.
