	Weimaraner World Domination Organization is pleased to announce our collaboration with Dr. Jessica Quillvan, DVM or "Dr. Q."! Dr Q. will be contributing each month to answer your medical and behavioral questions about our beloved Weims! Dr. Jessica Quillivan graduated from Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. After working for other veterinarians in the Houston area, she was ready to open her own practice in 2004. She and her husband have lived in Magnolia since her graduation in 1999. They have a son, three dogs, and a cockatiel. Dr. Quillivan holds membership in many veterinary organizations: AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), TVMA (Texas Veterinary Medical Association), AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association), and is a past Vice President of the Montgomery County Veterinary Medical Association. 	Dr. Q, Hello! Our boys vet was a grad from a&m as well and he was soooooooo wonderful and knowledgable. I can only assume the same about you. Well my weim Otto, obsessively licks any small cut/abrasion that he might get. It's to the point where, if left alone, he will lick it until it creates an infection/removes the scab and becomes bloody. I' ve learned from having a weim that they have some uninque ways. I was wondering if this is common for weims in general. Otto also suffers from separation anxiety, by the way, and I'm curious if this obssessivenes could also be linked to his high anxiety. Thanks. 	Rebecca, definitely Weims are high energy…therefore, high anxiety dogs!! Many other breeds (usually known for their high energy) will lick themselves into bloody messes too. Licking is a soothing behavior for dogs, he is soothing himself. All dogs will clean and lick a wound, but then stop. His excessive licking is definitely an anxiety/behavioral problem. I would like to know if Otto is overweight(what he actually weighs), what he is eating, and what his exercise regimen is. If you could please reply, maybe I can make some suggestions to help him. Yes, you are correct, the separation anxiety and licking are linked to his anxiety/energy levels. I recently read the TAMY Vet Medicine is ranked the 3rd or 4th best vet school in the country!!! 	Hello Dr. Q, I have an 8 month old Weimaraner and she is great! but I have a concern about her ears, I clean them once a week but they have a distinctive oder.. Anu has a new nickname which is Stinky, because of this.. I just wanted to know if this was normal for Weimaraners to have.. Also I am concerned about her wight, she has been hovering around 42 lbs and 21-22 inches tall (to the shoulder), is that normal for her age? she has been on Eagle Pack Holistic select about 4 cups of dry food a day. I take her with me on hour long walks. Thanks, Ali

	Ali, sounds like Anu has an ear infection. Her ears should not smell like that. I would suggest your veterinarian do a cytology of the ears and find out if she has a yeast or bacterial infection so that it can be treated appropriately. Yeast are the most common and once treated, some dogs need frequent ear cleanings with a drying/acidifying ear rinse just to maintain them. If she is active and healthy, she may just be a smaller Weim. The breed standard (according to AKC) is 23-27 inches at the shoulder when grown. An 8 month old still may grow a little more. Be sure she doesn’t have parasites or diarrhea (intestinal absorption problems). Dr. Q

	DR. Q, I'm a 1-ish year old pound puppy and my owner adopted me late last summer. I was overweight then and after being put on an EVOO diet I lost my weight. My owner noticed I was losing weight so she slowly changed to HALO (mistake) and now I'm eating Nature's Variety rotational diet (raw nuggets with dry food and dog friendly fresh raw food). She tried puppy food and that helped maintain but not add any weight. I'm extremely thin and my hair is coarse and brittle. I'm starting to get lethargic and my eyes are always red. My vet has a stool sample but it's taking them a few days to get back with us. My only symptoms are: weight loss (you can see my back bone and all my ribs), beginning stages of lethargy, red eyes, and coarse/brittle hair. I eat very well (mom always feeds me more than I'm supposed to get), I have normal soft but not loose poos, I drink VERY well and until this past 2 weeks have always been a typical energetic Weimy. Do you have any suggestions on how to help me gain weight and regain energy?

	I definitely would suggest a full blood profile and urinalysis, this is obviously not a dietary issue…as none of the foods are helping gain weight. I would double check for parasites (stool sample already being done) and heartworms with a blood test (depending on which part of the country you live in). I would also be looking for infectious causes (which can vary by region) tick diseases, fungal intestinal infection, etc. You need a full medical work up Mr. pound puppy. Dr Q

	Thanks! She goes to the vet today for blood work. I will let you know what they say. She had her fecal float on monday and we just got the results yesterday!(friday)! I couldn't believe how long it took to check for worms. Well I will let you know what the vet says. Thanks for giving advice! -Mia's owner

	I have tried to slowly introduce new treats to the pups (7 months old), but ended up with diarrhea in both dogs. This is my second attempt in the last 2 months to buy different good quality treats. My question is do I need to wait until they are older or are Weims that sensitive to changes in their diet?

	Well, apparently your Weims are very sensitive. I am also curious to know what "good" treats you are trying. Anything that is not hard and crunchy is going to contain fat and fatty things are more likely to cause upset stomach. Avoid the dried beef or chicken jerky treats also. I honestly give my dogs milkbones. Of course, they probably only eat 1 or 2 small ones per day....treats are not meant to be given often or in large quantities. Dr. Q
