Just had to pop in with kudos for my holistic vet. Spooky was badly injured by a dog last week and spent four nights at the e-hospital. When I was faced with the fact that I could no longer afford to keep her there but she wasn't ready to come home, I had to consider euthanasia. She was dopey and in a lot of pain, and couldn't eat or function. They had her in and out of ICU and I believed she really needed this intensive care.

I called both my old vet and new holistic one, not thinking they could help, but because I'd need to bring Spook in for daily bandage changes and wanted to factor in those costs as well.

Both were sympathetic and said they'd do everything possible to limit the costs. BUT it was the holistic vet who called back and said don't throw in the towel. I took her to his clinic and she's been there five nights so far. He's feeding her by syringe, giving her acupuncture, expressing her bladder, and giving her antibiotics and pain pills. He reduced the pain meds and she immediately became much more alert and herself. His approach is as minimalist as possible. Except for the acupuncture, he said there's nothing he's doing that I couldn't do, but we agreed he should keep her until Friday so I could be home all day for the first couple of days.

The point is, he stepped back and looked at the whole situation. The e-hospital was doing what hospitals do, and good for them - give the most complete care they possibly can. But it's the vet who looked at what was truly necessary, and it was really just to support her while her body heals itself. Later we'll look at herbs and enzymes and all that. But his holistic approach includes letting nature take its course and staying as far out of its way as possible.

And you know what, he takes a lot of joy in doing it. Kudos to him.
