How to Find a Holistic Medicine Veterinarian

By eHow Health Editor

Holistic medicine involves exploring all aspects of an animal's life. A veterinarian who uses holistic medicine will look at your pet's physical condition and behavior as well as your pet's everyday life. Holistic medicine can help in healing animal's physical and emotional ailments, from joint problems to digestive conditions. Finding a holistic medicine veterinarian for your pet isn't difficult. Follow these steps to find them.

Things You’ll Need:

* A computer with Internet access

Begin the Search for a Veterinarian
Step1
Get started by visiting the "American Holistic Veterinarian Medical Association" Web site (see Resources below). This site will help you learn more about what holistic veterinary medicine entails.
Step2
Read through the site and familiarize yourself with holistic medicine and the treatments it offers, especially if you're new to this practice.
Step3
Use the "Find a Holistic Vet" link on the "American Holistic Veterinarian Medical Association" Web site to locate veterinarians in a particular area.
Step4
Check the "Modalities Quick Reference" to see the treatments available.
Step5
Click on the "Search Now" link.
Step6
Start by filling in the "Advanced Search" categories. You don't have to know the name of the veterinarian you are searching for.
Step7
Click "Submit" to begin your search.
Step8
Notice the modalities noted within each veterinarian listed. This will ensure you contact the right practitioner.
Step9
Use the "Quick Reference" guide to clarify each meaning.
Step10
Contact the veterinarian you want to make an appointment.
Look at an Alternate Source
Step1
Search through the "Veterinary Medicine Internet Resources" Web site for other veterinarian choices (see Resources below). Click on the "U.S. & Canada: Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy Referral List" link for a good start.
Step2
Look for an international holistic pet doctor within the "Practitioner Databases" category on the "Veterinary Medicine Internet Resources" Web site.
Tips & Warnings

* Depending on the type of treatment you seek, holistic treatments can be moderately priced. The most inexpensive way to treat a condition through holistic medicine is by addressing you pet's diet.
* If you're truly interested in holistic care for your pet, check out the "Courses and Seminars" link on the "American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association" Web site.
* Take your pet to an animal hospital if it's convulsing, vomiting or having diarrhea.

These days more owners are embracing alternative medicines (holistic approach) as part of their dogs’ health care program. This is a very good trend and I strongly believe holistic veterinary will gain greater exposure as more dog owners are aware of its “existence.”

We know that conventional veterinarian clinics and hospitals abound and to locate a good veterinarian is pretty easy. All you have to do is to ask friends and neighbors or get referrals from breeders and trainers. Conventional veterinarians far outnumber alternative veterinarians, so you shouldn’t have any problem finding a quality conventional veterinarian in your area.

Whereas finding a good holistic veterinarian may be a little more challenging especially if you live in a rural area, or in a part of the world where holistic veterinary medicine isn’t widely accepted yet. Most owners, including myself, need to drive a little further to visit our holistic veterinarians but in the long run it is worth all the effort considering the non-aversive methods they use.

Having said, I’m not advocating that you should totally ignore conventional veterinarian assistance if holistic veterinary clinic is some distance away. You still need to have a conventional veterinarian within close proximity to go to in extreme emergencies such as life-and-death situations. In those cases, conventional veterinarians can provide immediate care and stabilize your dog so that you can get him to your regular holistic veterinarian. You’ll also want to have your holistic veterinarian on the phone to consult with your conventional veterinarian about proper care.
Finding a Holistic Veterinarian

Just as you would find a professional dog groomer, you want to get referrals from your friends and neighbors who own dogs, your breeder, pet supplies stores, dog trainers, animal shelters and welfare groups, and so on.

Although it may seem so yesteryear to many youngsters, local phone book is still one of your best sources to locating a holistic veterinarian. I’ve good reasons for stating it, so hear me out before calling me a Stone Age woman. Firstly, not everyone has Internet access or feel comfortable maneuvering technology gadgets. Secondly, many holistic veterinarians or practitioners have yet to incorporate technology into their “system.” In another words, they don’t have website highlighting their services.

Side note: As a student of holistic health medicine, I’m constantly being approached by peers seeking help to setting up their websites or blogs. As much as I love to help them set up a basic five-page website but I just don’t have the luxury to spare. Judging from my infrequency posting lately pretty much tell you how desperate I need of some personal time, REALLY! frown Anyway…

There is another indirect approach to locating a holistic veterinarian, that is to talk to holistic doctors or practitioners for humans. Many, if not some, have holistic veterinarians in their network. While searching for holistic doctors, you may want to look under these keywords in the phone book or google them: Naturopath, Homeopath, Acupuncturist, or Chiropractor.
Some useful resources on finding a holistic veterinarian near you:

For US Dog Owners

* American Holistic Veterinarian Medical Association
* The Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy
* American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture
* Veterinary Institute of Integrative Medicine

For International Dog Owners

* International Veterinary Acupuncture Society
* British Association of Homeopathic Veterinarian Surgeons
* International Veterinarian List

If you cannot find a holistic veterinarian near you, then you may have to search for a conventional practitioner who’s interested in holistic and alternative ideas. Talk to the staff on the phone to get a feel for the doctor’s viewpoints. If you feel good about what you’ve heard, go ahead and set up an appointment. Only then you can get some face-to-face time to see how receptive the doctor is to alternative veterinary health care for dogs.

Bear in mind that many medical doctors are still skeptical on holistic health about its usefulness and effectiveness, be it on humans or animals even though herbs and alternative therapies have been used for thousands of years. I dare say this from experience—an ongoing quest in persuading friends (including MDs) to adopt or at least be open to holistic therapies and alternative medicines.

Is Your Vet Really 'Holistic'?
By Christie Keith

One of the questions most frequently asked at the weekly online holistic animal care chat I used to run was, "What is holistic?" I think that's a definition you should get from your veterinarian before deciding if he or she is "holistic" or not.

Some vets truly are interested in finding less harmful alternatives to conventional medical treatments, and I applaud them. Some have realized that acupuncture is effective in controlling pain and inflammation, without the side effects of steroids. Good for them! Some have come to believe that there's no good reason to give annual vaccinations, and I think that's great.

But it doesn't make them holistic, no matter what they call themselves.

Some vets have been trained in veterinary homeopathy, maybe even well-trained. They may have studied acupuncture and nutrition, may know a great deal about herbs, remedies, diet. When a cat comes in with a hot spot, they know just what herb or salve or remedy to use to make it go away. When someone wants to help their hyper dog, they can always find the acupuncture point that soothes him.

But none of that makes them holistic, either.

Holism is a different way of seeing, and I've known allopaths who were more "holistic" than some of the holistic practitioners I've met. If you are peddling suppression, practicing allopathic medicine using homeopathic remedies, and looking for a "substitute" for cortisone, you are not thinking holistically.

Thinking holistically is not so much about the substances they prescribe, but the way they see your animal. Do they look at the WHOLE animal, at the mind, body, spirit, genetics, environment? Or do they just lunge for a "fix" for the complaint that brought you in?

Some vets, who have come out of a longtime allopathic practice and have become disillusioned, are very holistic in their thinking. They experienced a real "conversion" of the way they perceive sickness, health, and the life force. Others came into veterinary medicine with holistic stars in their eyes, and have always practiced that way. But there are a fair amount of vets out there who advertise themselves as "holistic" who really aren't, and there are a lot of folks getting very disillusioned with those vets.

The best way to find a vet, holistic or not, is to ask your friends for recommendations, and buy 15 minutes of this vet's time for an interview. (Sometimes I bring a dog in for something like a heartworm test or blood panel, just to get something concrete for my investment. However, I have also just paid for a 15 minute appointment, brought no animals, and spent the time interviewing the vet about his or her attitudes and beliefs and practices.)

For those of us looking for a holistic vet, this process should include questions about what "holistic" means to them, how they became involved with holistic medicine, what training they have had, how long they have been practicing holistic veterinary medicine, and perhaps what some of their experiences with it, both good and bad, have been. Try hard during this process not to talk too much yourself; some people will unconsciously try and please you with their answers, and you are looking for what this vet really thinks, not what they think you think.

I frequently refer people to the page on "Obtaining a Referral to a Holistic Veterinarian" at www.naturalholistic.com, or the AltVetMed website when they are looking for a holistic vet, but that must be only a FIRST step. Ask the vet for references, try and interview them, and try and work with them on simple problems before dumping your twelve-year-old with cancer on them. Badly practiced holistic medicine does more harm than well-practiced allopathy, in my opinion, and should be avoided like the proverbial plague. (Nothing does as much harm, in my book, as poorly practiced allopathy, of which there is a frightening amount out there.)

It might seem harsh, but it's true nonetheless: caveat emptor is the motto of the marketplace, even when that marketplace is holistic veterinary medicine: Let the buyer beware.

The above posts by Sunni and Porter are the most valuable words of free advice I have come across in a very long time and we are all very lucky to have acess to them. I hope every pup in Harmony's takes advantage of it. I found out about holistic veterinary care when our regular vet at the time could no longer answer my questions about alternative diets and nutraceuticals for my aging Miniature Schnauzer. He told me to go to a friend of his, a holistic vet, who turned out to be Dr. Carvel Tiekert, chairman of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. It changed my whole way of looking at any kind of medical care, animal or human.

Thank you Abby !

The sad part is many pawrents don't look into alternative medicine until just as you said their vet can no longer answer their questions and many vets will tell pawrents that there is no hope and nothing can be done !!!!
This is what my momma was told and these answers from her vet ( a very good friend ) were what sent mom on this wonderful journey that has allowed our family to have four seniors that are in great health and enjoying their golden years rather than just living until they die . cry

Health is more than JUST THE ABSENCE OF DISEASE , health is keeping your pups feeling good , stress free and doing so in a way that does not do MORE HARM THAN GOOD !
