Hiya fellow amazing yellows,

To EmmaJean and Dakota: Let us know how your training goes! I am still being trained everyday. My mom thinks I need lots of practice - I don't mind since I love the one on one attention and well the treats of course. Oh and the praise too! One thing my mom wants me to tell your mom's is to be consistent and have lots of patience. Also remain calm since it takes a lot of tries to get it right. It took me a good 2 weeks til it finally clicked in my labbie brain what exactly my mom wanted me to accomplish. This week my training is adding in a doorbell. The doorbell adds a bit of excitement so before the training was all done by my mom just opening the door up for people when she saw them come to it and get me to my "place". I will fill you all in when I get successful with the doorbell and "place". My parents hope really soon!

To Davey Dog: I was sad to hear that you have a thyroid problem but that is good that the vet found it.

Have a great week fellow amazing yellows and happy training!

Woof,

Tucker

Hi Tucker.....well day 2 of training and it's not as easy as mom thought.......do you have a brother or sister living with you? I have a brother and This seems to be making it harder...mom calls my brother to try to show him "place" and I go over too......or visa versa...and for some reason we think place means sit.....yes ...going to have to be real patient with mom...and mom with us.........laugh out loud but we're going to keep trying....she is going to separate us for the next lesson....let us know how you do with the doorbell..........you'll be my hero if you master this whole thing....way to go

Hiya EmmaJean,

I am the only dog in the house. I would think it would be more difficult with 2 dogs. If I had a dog sibling my mom would probably train each dog one at a time and maybe each have their own seperate "places". Maybe close to each other but like in two spots rather then them both together since that could be chaotic. I have a rug that is my designated place that is actually in another room but my house has an open floor plan that I can still keep eye contact with my mom. My mom found keeping my eye contact is key since if I can't see her then I forget why I am laying there waiting.

How my training started and how my mom did it:

My mom started off really slowly with me. First she had me lay on my rug and say the command of "place" and give me the treat and praise. This way I could get used to it. Then she would release me and let me walk around and then again say the command next to me and lead me to my carpet "my place". I did this several times for the first couple days. When I mastered knowing place then my mom added that she walked to the door and opened it (even though nobody was there). I was so curious of things I left my place repeatedly. So she had to start all over until I mastered laying there just while the door opened. Then she added saying Hi to nobody. Again I left my place to see who she was talking to. When I realized it was nobody and I maintained the eye contact then I realized what she wanted me to do.

When my daddy comes home and when friends come over to visit this is the most practice I get with it. My mom also told everyone to try and be boring by crossing their arms and sit down right away once they came. Surprisingly with everyone sitting it wasn't nearly as exciting and I just sniffed said hi and layed down with a toy. (normally I jumped up and said hi and was a bit nutty) It took 2 weeks until I was really really successful with the whole training of place. I have better days than others with it but my mom is very patient and very consistent with me and makes me go and do it correctly every time so I am successful.

My mom wants me to tell you that the training isn't easy but just take it slow. Treat lots and praise and remain calm. It will click in every dog's head it just takes a lot of time. Dogs are used to there own routines and this training changes there normal routines. A lot of times my mom wanted to give up but she is really not one to give up she just tried to make it fun and successful each time. She added everything slowly until I "got it". If I can master it - I know that your mom can master it with 2 dogs.

Adding the doorbell: It took me 3 days to master this skill with place. So it really wasn't as hard for me to learn since I understood what my mom wanted me to do for "place" this just was an added feature. Now I ignore the doorbell and wait for my mom to come and release me. I am not perfect with it yet but my mom tells me give me another week and I will master this skill as well.

So hopefully what worked for me will help you too! I know you will master this skill and training! It might take a little bit longer with two dogs but I know your mom can do it! Keep us posted!

Tucker

Hiya fellow amazing Yellows,

Well now that the tree is out of the house my training continues. It was easy to fall back to bad habits of running to the door like a crazy lab and not stay in "my place". So relearning this command is proving quite difficult. My mom tends to have to drag me over to "my place" these past several weeks. I am not winning since I don't want to do the command at all not even for treats. My mom is winning since she is being very patient and consistent and making me do it. My mom thinks I need to go back to the dogpark since with the snow I haven't been going much. That always makes me happy and calm.

I will keep you posted on my progress. How is everyone else doing in training?

Woof,

Tucker

You just reminded my mom that she needs to start with Thatch and me too...She's been busy with us moving and unpacking and now she's started working with dad...BUT.....she's going to start our "place" too........we don't make it easy for her....there's two of us ...but she said she's going to try us one at a time.........so keep us posted on how it's going with you and we'll do the same thing...........
Labbie hugs.......and good luck.......

my mom started something like that too. she makes me sit and stay still until the guests come to me. then, they shake my paw, and ask me how i am. it has worked very well for us, and all of our guests think that i am very polite.
anyway, i have something to say about the energetic part. i recently made two years old, and mom says i am starting to calm down. i dont notice it because i still get very excited when i see her, dad, or the other people that live in the house, but she has. i lay down calmly at her feet when she watched tv and i sit quietly when everyone is eating.

Way to go Sunni!!! I like the whole shake the paw thing when guests come. My mom is going to have to add that so that I am just as polite as you! And that is wonderful that you are calming down at such a young age - I just turned 5 yrs. old and I still have a ton of energy! I even get bursts of energy - where I run in circles like a crazy lab. My parents thought it was just a puppy thing but I am still doing it until this day! I heard of theses bursts called orbiting. (yes it even has a name)

I am still doing my training and for the most part I am doing pretty good. Every now and then I still get very excited and uh forget what I am supposed to do. But my mom is real consistent and it doesn't take me long to remember!

Congrats to Sunni and your mom for the great training!

Tucker
