I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing approximate costs of surgery. I've heard everything from $1000 to $4500. My vet said about $2500. He is really good and comes highly recommended but I still wonder if I should check around more. Thanks!

First, even if your vet is "licensed" to perform TPLO - I would make sure he is a board certified ortho surgeon. Sasha had TPLO in May 2007. It cost almost exactly $2200 from beginning to end (initial consult, and post-op check-ups and x-rays). It was kind of nice b/c we paid for everything at one time - so there were no surprise fees due during her check-ups.

Charlie had the regular old-fashioned surgery a month ago (teflon/nylon ligament replacement - called lateral stabilization). Our vet did the surgery - he has performed over a 1000 and only had one of them fail. Of course, Charlie's failed as well. The implant actually broke. He had to have a second surgery to have it removed and he has been recouperating. We have his surgery rescheduled for next week - the vet is going to use two implants and go one size up in terms of weight tolerance. Just in the last week, I am noticing his other knee starting to "go" as well.

The reason we decided to try to "cheaper" surgery, is that I had been reading some literature (I have a biology degree) on the surgeries and overall, there is no objective data to suggest one is better than the other. So we thought we would give it a try (it only $1000).

The other reason is that the TPLO is so invasive. We are very happy with Sasha's knee right now, but for the first few weeks her bone was not healing back together (which happens sometimes) and we were maybe going to need to do a second surgery and bone graft to get the bone to heal. That whole process was really stressful. So I figured we would try the less invasive way, and can always do TPLO later if we need to.

Good luck - I know it's stressful!

Wow, you guys have really been through a bit. We did choose TPLO because my vet doesn't do TTA and couldn't recommend any of the traditionals for my activity level. There isn't many choices near our home but decided it was probably best to use the same vet who cared for me during my FCE. I'm already disabled and he's familiar with my limitations, so it makes mom feel a little better.

Best wishes for a quick recovery to both of you! We are really worried about my other knee going too, so we know how you feel. Good luck!

Hey Copper! How'd you find me on here? I guess probably from this group! smile My surgery so far to give you an all inclusive price from the consult with the surgeon up to now has been just under $3200. Post-op x-rays are extra and of course so is PT.

No kidding, huh? My mom wouldn't mind if I got a job too! But here's a little secret. After your surgery they will feel so bad for you that you just make some sad eyes and look at them (which may be real, cause you might not feel so good for a while) and they can't help but think it was worth it. It works long after the times when you don't feel so good too!

Mom and dad paid $1800 for my surgery (including xrays and stuff before hand). I had extracapsular repair, not TPLO.

We are in Canada and there is only one surgeon that does TPLO in our area. Bandi had his first done in June 2008 - with everything it was close to 5 000.00. Well guess what! Bandi just had his second knee done two weeks ago at the same cost.

Though this is really disappointing - the surgery was great and the first leg healed very well. We had the TTA done on our first dog, and he never healed like this. Bandi was back to weight bearing within days of the surgery. No cast, no nothing. We are hoping for the same outcome on the other leg.

We knew when we got him, due to his size and breed this could be a problem.

Hello! Stella JUST had surgery on Monday for her torn ACL. The total cost for the surgery with meds included was $2,096. This did not include the consultation though.... I keep meaning to ask the vet which type of repair the surgeon performed, so at this time I don't know exactly whcich one, but most likely the most usual one.

I hope this helps!

We paid around $ 4000 for the first TPLO, which included extensive rehab afterward. The outcome was perfect, but I believe it would have gone just as well without the rehab. Buddy is in surgery as I`m writing this for his 2. TPLO. The estimate we got (different surgeon because we have moved) was $ 22oo-2500. No rehab included and I`m not sure we are going to do any. If you have a mellow dog rehab is great, but ours is so ancious and doesn`t like being handled. Alone getting him there stressed his leg more than the rehab did good.
