What do you do for fleas and ear infections? I got both right now and my mistress doesn't want to use biocides or antibiotics. She's looking into a IGR like Archer for the fleas. What do you think?

Hi! Cotton, poor baby I am sure it is very uncomfortable for you.

I check in one of my holistic care book for animals for ear infections. It says that there are two basic types of ear infections - bacterial and fungal.

It also states that do NOT try to diagnose and treat an ear infection by yourself. Several different types of bacteria and fungus can grow in the animal ear and it's very difficult to tell a bacterial infection from a fungal infection. It is important to select the correct medication to control the conditions. Treating the incorrect organisms will result in a worsened condition and longer recovery time. Sometimes it may even lead to a chronic condition.
The book recommends consulting a vet.

Here are two websites you can go to if you want to consult a holistic vet if there is one in your area
Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy www.acadvethom.org
American Holistic Veterinary Medical Assocation www.altvetmed.com

If the ear infection turns out to be a chronic condition, you may want to try acupuncture.

As far as fleas, I can't help you there...here in the desert we don't have that kind of problem. But you may have to contact a pest control for inside the house, otherwise you can continue to have this problem.

Good luck

Grrrreat info Cody!!!

That sound icky Domino! You poor baby!!!! First, get a bath starting with the neck and work your way down. next, treat your carpets with Borax (sprinkle, rub in and let sit for 24 hours then sweep up), start adding garlic powder to your food (that'll keep the bugs away). Your Mom can make you a spritz of essential oils to keep bugs off too.

Also, checking into a different diet might be a good idea since the concept of fleas and ear infections come from a poor diet. Try a food that's holistic or have your Mom start cooking for you.

See the vet and have them clean and treat your ears, also pull the excess fur from your ears. There's a grrreat products by NaturaVet that is an antiseptic ear cleaner. Mom squirts that stuff in our ears everyday and we haven't had an ear problem since (us labradorks are prone to ear infections since we're in the pool all the time).

There's a grrreat book that I'd encourage your Mom to purchase, it's by Andi Brown and it's called The Whole Pet Diet.

this is the website to order from. It's such a great book and Mom's favorite for helping us live a longer, healthier, happier life

http://www.wholepetdiet.com/

Good luck with everything!!! Let us know how you're doing and what you did to treat the problems your having.

Here are a couple of thread from Forums regarding using diluted Tea Tree Oil for ear infections. I can't verify it as I haven't used it and it seems like it's pretty split amoung Dogsters on whether you should or shouldn't use it.

I went to the vet's (yuck) and she said that much of my itching may be from 'growing pains'. She found a little flea and lice residue, but not as much as Mistress feared. Mistress put in an order for Archer IGR to prevent a flea infestation and we'll see how it works.

Mistress cleaned out my ears with a q-tip and applied some tea tree oil diluted 1:10 in canola oil. My ears look much better now, but she read that tea tree can be toxic if ingested by little guys like me, so she's going to try something else in the future. She found this recipe for ear infections and to help remove my ear hair:

4 oz. zinc oxide powder
4 oz. boric acid powder
1/2 oz. Iodoform powder

Mix well. Keep in a sealed jar in a cool dry place. Place a large pinch of powder in each ear, and use your finger to work it down. Wait five or ten minutes then pluck the hair out of the ears, being sure to get all the way down. Allow the dog to shake, but leave the excess powder in the ears. Repeat daily for an existing infection and monthly for prevention.

Oh Domino wave
The ears are no fun when they get infected and mom knows all to well smile Before we labbie grrrls came along, mom and dad had a ShihTzu Podo was his name and along with being that type of breed along came the bad ears and bad skin confused
It was a daily chore cleaning (and I do mean daily) and plucking his poor ears! He had such long hair in and out of his ears and it grew over night it seemed liked any ways.
We cleansed them on a daily basis to keep the smell down and occaisionly mom and dad would have to go the antibiotic route as well. Plucking and cleansing your ears daily will help you out tremendously!!! Essential oils and like Harmony said, GARLIC powder sprinkled in your food does wonders we pawmise way to go
Hope a new day finds you feeling much better and happy big grin

Borax sprinkled into the carpet and worked in, left for 24 hours and swept up kills fleas and flea eggs. Repeat every 3 months. Garlic sprinkled on grass helps to kills fleas and ticks outside.way to goway to goway to goway to goway to go

There's some garlic products strictly for grass. I think Cody or A bby and Shadow's Mom is using it.
