I was diagnosed with it myself a few months ago which makes Mom and Dad very very sad!!!!!

BUT... there's lots of stuff that they're doing for me that is helping me preserve what I have and keep me free from pain!!!!!

Holistic Diet... fresh fruits and veggies, plain non-fat organic yogurt mixed with my kibble of Senior Merrick dry. I get raw beef bones to chew on too!

dancing

Fish oils... lots of them! 180 mg of EPA per 10 pounds of body weight divided up throughout the day. I woof em!!! They tast grrrreat!!!!

dancing

Extra Vitamins C, E, B complex, egg shell calcium, alfalfa, kelp powder mixed in with my food too. Liquid ArthriSoothe Gold- maximum daily does for my weight mixed in there as well.

dancing

Phenocane capsules one a day with food.

%D%

Chiropractic and accupuncture every 3 weeks

%D%

Massages every night... your peep needs to take you to a canine massage therapist that works with arthur-itis or become certified themselves which would be way cheaper!!!

Lots of walks and swimming but no more running or jumping!!!!

We're always checking into other things as well and will post when we do. All of us big doggers in the house are pretty much on the same thing, it's an anti-arthritis way of life!

My mom and dad are very sad too - Dad has been busy getting stuff together to build some ramps to help me with the outside stairs and to get up on the bed. Mom has been cryingfrown
Great info, as always Harmony! Now, if someone could just tell me how you keep a 3 1/2 year old lab from running and jumping - especially when he is used to 'all star wrestling' with his sister - I'd be set!
We are going to try the Healthy Joint Formula from Springtime, Inc. It sounds like that has much of the stuff that you've listed already in it! I'll write down all the stuff you listed and whatever this stuff doesn't have we'll go and buy some.
Mom thinks that I might have to start getting canned dog food because she'll be spending an arm and leg on peanut butter! YUMMY!!!!

What a good Dogster group! I've added Phenocane to Zyflamend in the list of nutraceuticals I may need soon. Shadow, we are lucky that people are getting into more natural medicines.

Harmony I sad to learn that you were also told you have hip dysplasia...I have it..stage 4......the only thing my vet said that differs from what you've been told..is that I should be running...straight running, not twisting...because it's important that my rear leg muscles strengthen...since one hip is only done at a time...if I can build up the muscles...I might be able to only have one side done and be able to cope with that.
Well I guess our vets are all trying to help and still learning more about the disease.....
Abbey...I hope Shadow can find a place to swim...that would be one of the best exercises.

Is anyone familiar with The Tellington Touch? Do you think that would help? Mom has read a couple of books on that and SOMEWHAT knows what she is doing.

It's KIND OF like a cross between massage therapy and accupunture - no needles. It focuses on specific areas along with different kinds of massaging techniches to help with pain, etc.

Here is the website. Although you can't actually learn how to do it from the site, it gives you a little background on it and tells you what it can do.

It's good stuff too! That's pawsome your Mom learned how to do TT!!!!cheercheercheercheercheer

Our Mom is a certified canine massage therapist (she's also a licensed massage therapist) and specialized in arthritis technique's. Angel Bailey was her inspiration and her guinea pig to learn how to do it!way to go Bailey went to classes with Mom and enjoyed every minute of it. We get nightly massages on the nights that Mom is home and we WOOF em!!!!! There's books available to teach SOME technique's but if the problem is severe, you should go to someone that is certified.hug

That Tellington Touch is great! Mom got the video in the early 1990's when it was advertised on TV by Linda Tellington Jones. Every dog loves it and Fitz has to have his little TT cuddle-fest everynight at bedtime. But like The FL 5 advised, since you have a diagnosed condition, maybe you could get with a professional practitioner or maybe try accupressure.

She has tried to do a couple of the motions on Shadow's hips but he doesn't really seem to care for it there. We went to the camper this weekend and mom took us CANOEING!!!! Unfortunately, Shadow didn't do well with the sandbars and we had to cut our trip short. Within about a total of an hour in the sand (off and on) he couldn't even stand up on his back legs anymore.cry
Everyone was commenting to mom on how much he has gone down hill just in the last couple of weeks. The last time they saw him he wasn't limping at all, now all of a sudden his back legs don't want to hold him up. When we got back to the camper mom and dad both sat down with us and their faces got all wet - I think they were sad.
