Yup, you're dreaming. She has to be able to pick up the toys herself and bring them to you.

Ash learned in a previous life that picking up anything that was not food was very bad. It kinda ruined him for any retrieve work cry

I did, however, train my cockatoo to do this trick big grin as well as play basketball and put together a simple puzzle. They all work the same way.

Here's another idea based on ultimately what you want her to do.

This assumes she is motivated by treats/food

Take a hollow ball like a mini tennis ball; cut a slit in it and fill it with treats, let Patina see you do this. Then take the ball and walk a few feet away and place it on the floor. Walk back a few feet and sit down on the floor.

If she goes to the ball and noses it or touches it with her mouth or tries to pick it up then get and go to the ball and you pick it up, bring it back to where you were sitting, sit down, squeeze it open and take out a treat and give it to her.

Then repeat. Don't roll the ball just go to a place a few feet away and place it on the floor. After a few repetitions what you are hoping for is that she will pick up the ball and bring it to you so you can take a treat out for her.

Once you have her doing that reliably stop taking the treat from the ball every time and give her one from your pocket or treat pouch every other time. Eventually you want to be able to stop giving her any treats from inside the ball and just rewarding her when she brings it to you.

Is that clear?

I would use a combination of shaping, targeting and back-chaining to train this behavior.

There are a number of behaviors here (go to toy, pick toy up, hold toy in mouth, carry toy to location, drop), each will need to be trained separately and then chained together.
