Well, Nick is the expert on retrieves, maybe I can get him to pop in and help with that.

Once you have a retreive, I can help you shape the picking things up and putting them in a basket.

I'll give Nick a hollar and see what we can do.

Hi Patina,

Sounds like it would be best to work on this without the other dogs around at first.

Will she retrieve a toy sometimes, like when she wants to play with you with the toy? Does that mean she will get it when you throw it and bring it back?

There are a couple of games you can try with her.

Here's the first one: Tie a short line to her favorite toy. Sit down on the floor and throw the toy a few feet in front of you and when she approaches it begin to drag it back to you. If she sniffs the toy or mouths it encourage her and keep moving it toward you slightly. Hopefully that will encourage her to pick it up in her mouth. If she does put a little tension on the line and call her to you. If she returns all the way to you with the toy in her mouth exchange it for a treat and praise! Keep doing this until she understands the game. Then do it without putting tension on the line, eventually do it without the line. Once she is retrieving you may want to add a cue.

If that doesn't work let me know I can give you several other games to try with her to get her to retrieve.

As you progress with her training you may also find it fun and useful to name her toys so you can put a few out on the floor and ask her to get a particular one.

Asher can help you with the rest much better than I can. Nick is also good at emptying the toy basket, the box of duck bumpers, his decoys etc. I've had no better luck getting him to put them back than I did with my kids. laugh out loud

ok thanks for the help! way to go she learns really quick so i will try to start on this right away!
and ya she will bring it back (some times) when I throw it not when she just wants to play
Natasha (our poodle) does that (brings toys to you when she wants to play and you cant, and paws at your legs and taps on your feet) and I find it kind of annoying but no one ells in the house seems to mind laugh out loud I don't want patina to start doing that! ..... she wont will she? thinking

thanks for the help!

OK, Patina, once you have the retrieve, put the toy box or basket between your feet. At first, just have her bring the toy to you and out it in your hand over the toy basket and C/T.

When she is doing that reliably, pull your hand so the toy falls in the basket and C/T.

Once you have her dropping the toy right into the toy basket, move it slightly to the side, like a few inches. As she becomes more relible, keep moving the basket further away from you, until it is in it's place.

Hmm...no, you will want to have the retrieve to the point where she can pick a toy from the floor for retreival before you put the two pieces together.
