I am so proud of Mulligan.
We have been taking agility classes since Feb and I have been trying to get him to go faster though the weave poles. Last night he finally started running and "hopping" through the poles. I was so excited! I gave him an extra big piece of chicken and lots of praise. One problem he only did it twice...any advice to help keep up the excitement and the speed?
Thanks Mulligan's Mom

First of all, what training method are you using to teach Mulligan the weaves?

We didn't really use a training method other then we started with channel poles in agility class and after two to three weeks we had the poles in line. At home we only have the poles that stick in the ground. He has been weaving between them without missing poles or his entry, but just kinda lolly gagging. He gets really excited about all the other equipment and will run, but he just (except the other day) goes really really slow through the poles. I don't know why? Sometmes I give him treats part way through the poles (6) but mostly after he has finished them. I am definetly open to any ideas. I know it is a long process to train an agility dog but like most people can probably relate too I am a little inpatient. I am very excited and looking forward to go to competitions and meet all the really cool dogs and handlers out there.snoopy

I personally think that if the poles are in line after two or three weeks, they went in line too fast. If you are practicing one or two times a day, the poles should be moved in one inch together every two weeks.

To increase speed, you could put a target (could be a food bowl) about 5 to 10 feet away from the end of the poles. Put Mulligan's FAVOURITE treats inside the target. With the channels open about 18" wide, put Mulligan in a Stay and then call him through. He'll probably race through to get to the food and to you.

If you work slowly and don't rush the training process, I guarantee that you'll have a much better dog and you'll have a lot more fun at trials than if you rushed through training the obstacles. smile

Good luck! big grin

That is a great idea with the food bowl...I put treats on a plate at the bottom of contact obstacles. I just never thought about doing it for the poles too! way to go I guess it is like the old saying slow and steady (training) wins the race (trial). cheer
Thanks for the tips.

Chicken on a plate at the end of the poles makes me crazy! I just go through the weaves as fast as I can to get to it. I am now "hopping" through the weaves all the time instead of walking! party It is soooo much fun.
We started a new agility class last week, and it was chaos! My mom and I are the only new additions to the class. Everyone else wasn't allowed to take the advanced class. We felt like the new kid on the playground nobody wanted to talk too. Three of the dogs are dog aggressive. There are two instructors doing two different drills, and a mini course. It was a little overwhelming. The teacher says she does it on purpose to teach everyone to work under heavy distraction. I guess it just wasn't what we were expecting. I hope after a few classes I get use to the craziness. wave

That's GREAT that you're hopping through the poles now! Great job Mulligan!

We used to go to a class like that! Everybody was put into two separate groups doing two separate sequences, so two dogs were running at the same time. It was really tough and distracting for me. Maybe your mom could switch to a different instructor, depending how you are?

Just remember that the main priority it to have fun. smile
