So, we went fishing yesterday, and when we got home, my husband threw his leftover minnows in the garden!! He was like, "Haven't you ever heard of that?" I haven't. I looked it up this morning and I see that there are quite a few "do it yourself" fish fertilizers, so I guess its not completely crazy. However, my husband just threw the fish in there - no composting or anything!

I guess we'll see what happens.

I also just read that fish provides nitrogen, and on saturday, I just sprinkled coffee grounds in the garden, which is also supposed to be good for nitrogen. Hopefully we don't have a nitrogen overload.

Has anyone ever used fish in their garden or even heard of it?

i have heard of it, though i don't know exactly what it does. i've heard it's great for rose gardens. we had crab legs for dinner a few weeks ago, and my husband threw all the shells into the garden. they've since been tilled under.

i have an organic gardening encyclopedia at home. i'll look in it tonight and see if it says anything about fish.

poor little fishy minnows. frown

I know! I didn't even know why he brought them home. Why not let them go in the lake?!

Thanks for looking into it!

I guarantee Brody will be in the garden and those little fishies will be dug up if he's outside for any period of time by himself shock

LOL....I've heard of it. I've even done it. We used to bury fish heads and entrails in the garden 2 months before planting potatoes or other 'tubers' because it helped make the soil rich for them. Be careful though, sometimes it's better to add nitrogen/phosphate compounds because nitrogen produces vibrant color and phosphate produces growth. No one wants pretty colored veggies that are too small for eating.

My boss uses the dog's feces (YUCK...which is why I refuse to eat anything he has grown) and it's quite common around here for people to do so. I was asked the other day to bring Mack and Tonks into someone's garden on our walks so they could do their businesssilencedthinking

Back to the fish thing though. Fish meal is a fairly common ingredient in fertilizers (or at least it was when I was a kid) and can be very beneficial. I believe you can get soil test strips from garden supply stores (specialty) so that you don't overload. I'll check into it and report back.

Thanks for the responses!

Any idea on how to add phosphorus?

Glad to know other people do this fish thing laugh out loud My husband grew up around lakes so I guess that's what they do.

Dog feces is a little disturbing confusedI wouldn't even want to put my hands in the dirt!

Here are some soil improving links. They have adding phosphorous as well as several other things.

As for the obsession with using dog manure around here, it really freaks me out. I won't eat vegetables grown around here because I cannot help but wonder what they used to enrich their soil. confused

I've been told that using dog feces for your flowering garden is a good idea but that you aren't supposed to use to grow items that you consume. Was it Sabrina...?

No problem....I don't know about using them in flower beds but definitely not food.
