First a bit about Reiki.

This excerpt is from the book "Animal Reiki' by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad.

The term Reiki is usually translated as "universal life energy." It is a holistic healing system, meaning that it treats the whole being, addressing problems and healing at all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Along with other therapies, such as acupuncture, homeopathy, Qi Gong and flower essence therapy, Reiki is part of the emerging field of energetic healing, rediscovered from the wisdom and knowledge of ancient cultures for use in modern times. Everything in the universe is made up of and connected by energy. By transmitting the healing energy of the universe along energetic pathways and through the practitioner's hands to the client, Reiki heals as deeply as needed within a being to create a shift towards health.
A reiki treatment can be given inperson, with the hands of the practitioner placed on or at a short distance from the client; or, since Reiki is energetic in essence, it can be sent across a distance, across a room or to another geographic location. Reiki can be used to maintain health and energetic balance in a healthy being, to heal illness, injuries, emotional and spiritual problems, and the ease the transition between life and death.

End of excerpt

Reiki is taught to initiates by a Reiki Master who "attunes" the new practitioner to better enable them to channel the energy. The symbols and attunements are based on ancient Tibetan rituals but modern Reiki started in Japan and has moved to the West with several Masters who have come here.
I myself have level two Reiki which means I have also been taught to do distance Reiki. This enables me to work on animals who are traumatized and will not allow a person near or to be touched by anyone. I practice on both humans and animals. I have only been practicing since November 2007 so am still learning and discovering the energy's powerful effects. It is still difficult to explain to some people, hence the excerpt above. My "intellectual brain" seems to get in the way occasionally, but even so, the Reiki works!!

The Reiki process can be very powerful spiritually and emotionally and I have had several clients (human) that have said they experienced very strong emotions during treatment and often have what are called "releases which are physical manifestations of the spiritual changes. Sometimes they cry, sometimes they twitch, most often they sigh a lot. It is quite powerful.
As for the animals I have worked on, one client called me after the session and asked if I switched her dogs! Her slow and lazy Bull Mastiff was tearing around the house with a toy and her hyper young male Dobie was curled up in a ball sleepily watching the Mastiff play. So, for me it is about balance...that the process works to remove the excess Ki in areas it needs to and to add to the areas Ki is needed. This means that sometimes the results are not what we, as humans, expect...but are invariably for the best higher self of the animal or human being treated.

Length of treatment varies, as much as the animals do...some will happily sit there, putting their tired or injured parts directly in your hands for an hour and some will take what they need in 15 minutes and then mosey away to chill out...they decide the when and how much.
I believe the big thing is the energetic contact triggers what is called "the relaxation response" in the client which allows the immune system or whatever is needed to activate and help heal what is suffering. I also feel that for some, human and animal, it is a bonding that many of us miss out on in our everyday lives.

Cracker,

Are there any certifying organizations for Reiki practitioners, a website perhaps where someone could search for a practitioner in their area?

To locate a practitioner or teacher you can try www.iarp.org, this is the international Assoc. of Reiki Practitioners and they have a worldwide directory of teachers (Masters) and practitiones.

There is also www.reikialliance.com, this is an alliance of Reiki Masters of the Usui System of Reiki (there are several schools of Reiki), this is the one I was taught under.

Neither one of these associations require membership to practice. If you have been certified by your Reiki Master at the different levels then you are free to practice privately at any time so not all practitioners are registered. Because the practice is non-invasive, can involve no touch or light touch and is done fully clothed most governmental bodies do not require any special licenses or certificates. Here in Ontario the only time you are required to join the Canadian Reiki Assoc is if you are to be practicing in a spa environs so the province can license you as a holistic health practitioner. They put in this law only due to an increase in rub and tug massage parlors calling themselves "spas" and wanted to be able to police them better.
Anyone can learn to do Reiki, in fact the authors of the book I quoted above often teach their clients and staff at rescues etc to provide Reiki to the animals in their care. It does not require much technical skill and the teachers really are there to teach you to get in touch with the Rei Ki (Universal Energy) in a more concentrated and focussed way and to teach yourself to protect your own energy from being polluted or drained by the person you are working on.

I think the best place to find a practitioner or Master is to check out your local holistic health magazines. These are often available free at many natural food stores.

Wow, how did I miss this thread???

One of my people is a reiki practitioner. She got started with it all because of me. Now the reiki goes well beyond me.

There are lots of great reiki masters introducing others to reiki for animals. The one whom my person trained under practices multiple modalities, my reiki good buddy

My person has met reiki practitioners who are familiar working with only people and/or situations. Once they learn about working with animals, they are generally very intrigued. Share the reiki, right?

That's exactly right Aina!

I will check out the site you listed. I am a relatively new practitioner and have done both animals and humans since the beginning.
I regularly give Reiki to my cats and Cracker...my younger cat will come from anywhere when I am sharing with the others, the siren call is strong! I also recently did my first distance treatment on Asher when he sprained his leg. Asher's mom was watching TV at the time so my curiousity as to whether he had any releases was unsatiated....but I did get a strong sense of where the injury was so that was a new experience for me. My intuition is really getting stronger with the practice..an interesting side effect.

Cracker, thanks for the links. Unfortunately, we won't get to find a teacher/practitioner until we get back to the States. You'd think that since it was an "Eastern medicine" type thing that they'd have someone over here doing it (especially since Japan is just a hop, skip, and a jump away and a frequent vacation destination for the locals).

That bums Mom out. She's been wanting to try it for awhile.

Scooter,
You can still find a practitioner for you guys. It may require some long distance phone work but Reiki practitioners at level two or higher can do distance Reiki. It does not require someone laying their hands on you. Energy is everywhere.

Right now with the time zone differences, it would be difficult to use someone in the states. Mom is going to check around on base and see if maybe she can find someone who isn't listed. She also wants to try to find a holistic vet over here. So far most of the hold up is the language barrier, but we are working on that. She and I started our second week of classes tonight.way to go

It may be a good idea if you have a "community" bulletin board or something on base to put up a little sign. You may be surprised to find someone who is a practitioner who is there in another capacity. I know many people who have their Reiki certification and have never "officially" practiced but do it on a casual basis.
