I often use my tail as a swimming aid. It is a pretty good tail, long and round and makes a good rudder. It doesn't have any feathering on it and a certain dog in my house who shall remain nameless has started bragging on his great big plumey tail which he wags all the time in my face.

If I develop allergies, I am going to be very upset. It isn't as if his big plumey tail has any real use! Can't he keep it to himself? I note that you have a rather plumey tail, Demon. Perhaps you could give us a little tail etiquette?

First of all, any type of tail is good. You have probably noticed dogs without tails which I think is cruel. A dog is supposed to have a tail, but I'm guessing a lot of humans are the ones with tail envy which is why they do such horrible things to some dogs.
I do have the type of tail you mentioned, but it curls up and doesn't really tend to get into anyone's face. When I go through the house, my tail doesn't even knock anything down. There is no reason why Samoa should be waving his tail in your face. I think he is doing it deliberately, and I would suggest you knock him around with your tail. Your tail will bug him a lot more. All tails are okay. We dogs are supposed to have different types of tails so we don't all look the same. Don't let him make you think his is better.

Why do dogs sleep so much? Are we not losing life experiences by sleeping all day long?

I am sorry about the slow response. My human brother Jeff is usually on the computer at night, and you know how humans are. They think they run things. I think that might be why dogs sleep so much. It might be a symptom of being depressed which is caused by the humans trying to tell us what to do. I will add that I happen to enjoy a good nap--or several good naps. When I'm napping, I can do anything I want. Sometimes I'm a secret agent saving the world and sometimes I'm mushing a sled in Alaska. Dreaming about mushing is a lot easier than actually mushing. I think dogs sleep a lot because we have learned that it is a lot easier to dream than to actually do stuff--and much less work. The humans should try sleeping more. I think they would be a lot happier than they are when they are working. That is this dog's opinion anyway.

I live with a five-year-old Shih Tzu/Lhasa mix called Raja Babu (Mr. King). He is not at all like a Tzu. He is 20 lbs. and very alpha. The problem with him is that he is Mama's boy and since he was here first, everything is his. The thing that really bugs me is that he dominates me by humping me all the time. Mom fusses over me, Raja humps me. I get a treat, he h__ me. I run faster than him,...all day long, all the time. I know what you are thinking. No, Deemster, he was fixed when he was 6 months old! He is just super Alpha. We can no longer go to the park because he tried to h__ the Rottie who was not happy! Mom is also very tired because that is his first reaction when he sees new pups. She has tried shaking can with coins next to his years, she has tried to put him in time out,... nothing changes his behavior. It is his way of saying "hello." Too bad Cesar Milan does not live in Oregon, otherwise we would have visited him. So, in utter desperation, I am asking for your advice.

I think you have several alternatives:

1. Hump him first. Angel and I both think we should be lead dogs. Of course, I should be the lead dog. Angel is just a mis-guided puppy, and who want a mis-guided dog to be in the lead? Since you are fast, and he is getting older, try humping him before he humps you. Imagine how surprised he would be if you were the one doing the humping.

2. Bite his ear. Angel does that all the time, and it has been mentioned in the movie, Snow Dogs. In the movie, they always suggest that the human bite the dog's ear.

3. Muzzletoff. Mommy stopped Angel from biting her and other humans when she was teetheing (she honestly wasn't trying to hurt anyone) by giving her a "Muzzletoff". That is when Mommy or Jeff holds her mouth shut while they sing the Muzzletoff song (not even a minute). Angel gets so mad that you are holding her mouth shut that she learned to quit teetheing on the humans. It also didn't actually hurt anything but her pride. It can be anything that Raja hates, but won't actually hurt Raja. If Raja hates being in a crate, 10 minutes in the crate might help. Just make sure it is something that Raja particularly doesn't like. Because we dogs are individuals, what one dog despises, another one might not mind so find out what really gets to Raja and use that.

4. Is it possible to write Cesar and ask him what to do? Maybe he'll come and personally help you. You never know. I bet you aren't the only one out there with this problem.
