Let's just say my first night of attempting this did not go well...For some reason he doesn't like the lack of space my lap provide. He'll jump on our bed..which is really high..no probs...me sitting on the couch..ok...if I move onto a solitary chair...he just puts his paws on my knees and barks at me. thinking

I'll keep trying..maybe add a pillow on my lap.

AROooooo Simbawave So many ways to teach this trick shock
Okay Simba, you jump up on the bed...so instead of Mommy using a chair and pillows, perhaps try in the bedroom to start (doing something you already do). Whichever motivation method Mommy uses (clicker, treat, verbal reinforcement, etc.),
a]- go from a sit-stay on the floor to "up" (or other word) & reward.

b]- back to floor position, then "up" & reward, repeat until "got it"

c]- back to floor position, then Mommy sits on edge of bed and gives
"up" (not gives up...BOL), directing you onto her lap instead of
the bed and reward. Repeat several times, making it exciting &
fun ... then break time for at least an hour before trying again, if not the next day.

d]- Simba not jumping onto Mommy's lap shock thinking well, time for luring (enticing, bribing) you with some really super (I mean super) treat.

e]- That still not working??? Try what my daddy does... he holds a super treat with his lips, making sure that I know it's there, and mumbles "up" while motioning with his arms
confused 2 warnings about this method - don't try it with a dog that will rip your lips off trying to get the treat AND, make sure to watch those nails if they aren't trimmed (also don't wear thin material shirt).
Finally, as with any trick --- be careful what you're taught, because Mommy will also have to teach you to differentiate when it is okay to jump up into her arms & when it's not; OR who wants a dog to jump up on them or not .... the consequences of tricks .....

With all that said, daddy started teaching me with him kneeling and getting me to "target" his mouth on command, then gradually went to crouch, then stand with arms extended (indicating pathway). Use of treats (or clicks) can eventually be removed. BUT HERE, check this video on my page instead of all my words: Leapin' Fritz

Often times when teaching a particular trick, us pups start to offer other behaviors that we think will earn us a treat as we try to figure out what our hooman wants us to do thinking thinking thinking
Simba, your mommy said "if I move onto a solitary chair...he just puts his paws on my knees and barks at me" ...
OKAY, so there is a behavior that can be transformed into another trick (that he already knows how to do) way to go
This could be called the "pray" (or "adore me"?) trick applause
snoopy snoopy snoopy snoopy snoopy
---Hooman in sitting position with pup sitting directly in front. On cue word ("pray"), pup places paws on hooman's knees with head bowed until treat & released. No head bow but paws on knees with barking? shock Okay, so half of trick is there. Now silence barking (don't treat/reward if barking). Then, last part of trick - the head bow - can be shaped by luring head down with treat (or click, whichever you use). Practice once or twice a day, working on consistency until pup "gets it" on command.
Eventually, your hooman will be able to have you exhibit the same behavior while your hooman is standing, if that's what your hooman wants to work into the routine.
Good luck wave Fritz ^..^ snoopy

Hey Fritzie...I'm not getting the whole jump into the lap idea...not on the couch, bed or chair. frown

I just put my paws up on her knees..then jump back and bark my head off. Mom sees it stresses me...so she'll perhaps try to shape it into a "say my prayers" trick.

Mommy, how much physical handling does Simba allow or seekthinking
How does Simba do with close personal contact (not talking about typical bed/couch snuggling)? Does he let you know (and how) that you are invading his space? Any problems picking him up & holding him in your arms (or what behavior does he exhibit when you do)?

For example... can he be sitting on the floor in front of you and then you pick him up and place him on your lap (while you're sitting)thinking
You're right to watch for signs of stress since this should be a playful & fun bonding event . . . not forced.
Could also be that Simba excels more in events (i.e. agility, etc.) where he does not want nor need close physical contact. Even though you & he are a team in agility - it's a different interaction than some tricks that require the close contact ??? Some pups only allow close contact on their terms (including being picked up)...
As you say, I would try shaping into smaller behaviors for now until you get something that is acceptable to both Simba & you for a trick. way to go
Best of Luck, with Tail wags, Fritz ^..^ snoopy

SUCCESS!!! happy dancehappy dancehappy dancehappy dancehappy dancehappy dancehappy dance (well, almost...)

Patience is key with Simba, and making SMALL steps!! He is almost jumping right into my arms now!!

He started finally trusting that he would be stable, and has been jumping into my lap with ease. I had him just jumping into a chair, on a box, and working his balance and core by having him balance on a giant exercise ball (while I hold it still!).

Then I started bending on one knee and seeing if he's jump up onto my leg...HE DID!! So thats's where we are...I'm slowly going to be crouching up...but I'm so happy!! cloud 9cloud 9cloud 9

We are back to the drawing board on ladder tricks crycry Fritz absolutely loves climbing a ladder, but the going down thing is problematic (his legs too short to feel the next rung down???thinking).
SOoooooo, leave it up to Simba to give me another directionhamster dance
The exercise ball!!! Being able to balance and move the ball forward by walking on it happy dance
Any suggestions for thisshrug Can't find too much of help on internet ...
