Hey, Everypup I have a question. I think I am going to a meeting in March. It is a rescue organization, that meets for a weekend, and they walk in a parade with your own dogs and some of the adoptable dogs. You may bring your own pet for socialization. I would like to take Emma with me. She gets excited- pulling-straining at the leash whenever we come near other dogs. I don't think it is leash aggression. shrug She plays with (admittedly all smaller dogs) a mini dachshund, a couple of yorkies, and an american cocker spaniel. She has only had an issue with one of the yorkies, who cannot tolerate her, we DO NOT let them play/be around each other any longer. She was attacked by another dog. It was larger than her- she's ok- however I have noticed that she does get more worked up if we come across a bigger dog.

My question is- How do I prepare her for meeting other dogs? There is a dog park in another city- would that help? Should I try getting into a doggie daycare? How can I expose her to other situations in a small town where I am sad to say, we do not see many people walking their dogs?

We have done doggie classes and for the most part she did really well, and we have even moved on to Rally-O.

I realize I may have to til next year to take her, it just sounds and looks so darn fun!dog

thanx

Emma, we marched at PM Awareness Day this year. Merlin has become so confident since we adopted him that I didn't think he would have any issues. Sadly, the bullhorn terrified him and I had to carry the 20 lb lug most of the way.

My suggestion would be to do as much as you can to prepare her but take precautions. May bring a puppy stroller or a sling in case you do have to carry her.

I brought Cookie to the 4th of July paradelast year for socialization. (Because she is a little too bossy with other dogs.) She behaved almost like a CGC! I was so proud of her.
Along with what Asher said, maybe you should take a little bag of treats and give them to her to boost her confidence and make it a plesent experience.

BOL, Asher! You had to carry the poor little thing??? shock

Emma, we attended our SPCA's Pet Fest and Paws Walk last June. I was nervous going in since Chipper is pretty anti-social and not very tolerant of other dogs. My trainer was confident that Chipper would be "the best behaved dog there." So, we tried it. He did great!

I kept him on a leash the whole time, I had a pocket full of treats and I just kept cool, calm and collected. I didn't let him play with other dogs or sniff very much. If a dog approached him, I let them sniff for a couple seconds and then called Chipper and said "let's go" and walked away before any growls happened. And if they did growl, no big deal, I just continued walking away.

We did however have a back up plan. We had organized a team to walk with and we couldn't both leave the event. My BF and I took two cars, so that if Chipper couldn't handle the situation, one of us could leave with him. Fortunately, it didn't come to that and we had a great time!

Work on a good solid heel before you go to the event and keep a pocket full of treats. You'll do great!

Good luck with your march! It sounds like great fun!

Thanks for responding everyone. What if Emma is not motivated in public by treats? In a low distraction area, treats work A.O.K. But out in publicshrug usually low interest. (although will definitely bring treats)
Yes will keep her leashed, even will bring the gentle leader too.
I thought maybe talk a long walk before we go into the meeting, tire her out?
We do clicker training...can you click and then give vocal reward? (good dog, etc)

laugh out loudlaugh out loud Love it Asher, I'll try to find a sling for a 40+lb. dog, hehe

Emma, what do you use for treats? They may not be high enough in value. Kibble works ok for Chipper in our house and in training sessions at home. For training class, we break out the Wellness Pure Rewards Jerky, hot dogs, cheese, chicken or peanutbutter. For high distraction zones, such as Pet Fest, I have to admit, that I will use Pupperoni. It is like crack for him! It is his highest value treat and will overrule most distractions.

Whenever I use treats, I also always use vocal rewards.

Well for treats in class I used a special food- which I don't remember the brand. I bought it at the training facility, I am pretty sure it's a decent quality as she only sells Innova, Wellness, etc. That I only used for class, so it would retain it's specialness. At home and for walks I just use some of her regular food Innova & Natural Something (sorry brainfart). Will try hot dogs again, maybe throw in some cheese (she's a total fool for cheese).

With the clicking- is it a MUST you have to food reward? Can I just give vocal praise, or should I always combine with food. I give praise, as I need to keep her interested- she gets bored easily by repetition, along with food right now. But have kinda given up with clicking in public as it does not seem to keep her attention.

Thanks for the help, you guys. I think I will be taking her with me. We have walked in a few parades with other dogs, and while she gets excited, she calms after awhile.wink

Emma, click = treat. That is why clicks work. My trainer follows what Bob Bailey suggests. If you click, you must reinforce (with food), even if you click the wrong behavior.

However, once a behavior is learned, you can switch to a verbal marker that only gets food rewards some of the time. Let me know if you want to know how to switch over to the verbal reinforcer and I'll post it, but, as many things I post, it is long.

I am curious why the treats need to remain special for class? We switch up our treats a lot. High value for us would be raw hamburger, liver, cooked or raw, chicken, lunchmeat, hotdogs, Gio's fishy fudge or cheese. Lower value is store bought, premade treats.

And I agree with PPs. You need to try a higher value reinforcer in stressful situations. The higher the stress and distraction, the higher the reinforcer needs to be.

My trainer just suggested that maybe we keep a special treat for stressful/distracting situations. That's allshrugsmile Before that I had a few different options in my pack, it just wasn't interesting her- maybe I'll add some cut up chicken/hamburger and something else really smellylaugh out loud

Thanks Asher, I would love to know how to do the vocal stuff. I just wasn't sure about the click/treat/praise, so that answered that-thanx.

Love your video on loose leash walking! That's pretty much how we learned too.
