Hi everyone. I just wanted to see if anyone had some advice on how to tame a destructive chiweenie. I got Chewy neutered about a month ago, and I do not see any calming behaviors. I am at work all day, and he rarely gets to be outdoors. I feel awful, but now I am desperate. He has completely torm apart my bed and duvet cover, shoes, knocks over vases, etc! Please help if you can!!

I have 2 chiweenies and Dijon will be content to sleep all day and he is not destructive at all. Then we have Kewpie -- she is destructive when she is bored -- and loves to tear things apart. I find that if I hide treats around the room, this will keep her busy, as well as puzzle toys and kongs full of small treats. This keeps her busy and out of trouble. Also, we confine them to the back room -- it is big enough for the two of them and there is nothing that can be destroyed.

Thank you so much for the advice! I have purchased a Kong, but Chewy didn't take to it like I would have hoped....maybe I should try a different filling for it! Thanks again.

A friend of mine suggested filling the Kong with peanut butter then freezing it. Your doggy can eat the peanut butter as it thaws. Also, my little guy likes his Busy Buddy Twist-n-Treat. You put small treats in it (Charlee Bear treats are the perfect size) and screw the two parts together. Then your doggy has to figure out how to get the treats out of the openings.

I feel your pain. After getting Klitschko neutered, he became quite a busy body, getting into things he never had interest in before. Unrolling and tearing apart rolls of toilet paper became his favorite thing to do. I found that the little flavored raw-hide bones kept him busy for quite some time. Then I started hiding them around the house, in areas that were safe and he stopped getting into things and tearing the house apart! I also had to treat my home as if I had a crawling/walking toddler around.

Those are some really good tips! Jezebel is just starting to chew on things so hopefully I can try some of these things out before it gets any worse.

I would also consider giving your dogs a little more exercise... if you have time to run around with them a little bit in the morning, they'll be pooped while you're gone. Less energy = less destructive behaviors! Good luck! wave

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR GREAT ADVICE. I HAVE INCORPORATED SOME NEW TOYS, AND THEY SEEM TO BE WORKING. I DO HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION THOUGH. HAVE ANY OF YOU EXPERIENCED YOUR CHIWEENIE DIGGING A LOT? WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON CRATING? MY CHIWEENIE HAS DUG THE CARPET AS IF THERE WAS SOMETHING BURIED RIGHT UNDERNEATH!!!! I AM TRYING TO DO ALL I CAN TO MAKE A GOOD HOME FOR HIM, BUT I DON'T BLAME HIM FOR ACTING OUT WHEN ALONE. ULTIMATELY, I DO NOT WANT TO GIVE HIM UP, BUT I KNOW HE DESERVES BETTER.

One thing that I have found that works is to hide little treats through out your home or the room he/she is going to be in. My rufus doesn't chew but has seperation anxiety. I know that searching for the treats keeps him occupied for a little bit. You could try that.

Molly is a chewer too. She has chewed up things from wood trim, pillows, comforter, and my antique dining table chairs. I found that having toys on the floor in every room. I give her raw hid to chew on too until it gets too small and then I throw it away. I don't need to hide anything from her because she will do that herself. She loves to hide her chew toys from my other dog Baxter. Good thing is she does remember where she hides them. Her chewing has slowed down now that she is over a year old, but I still have to have toys everywhere for her. Just every once in a while I catch her chewing up something I don't want her too. I think she gets bored!
