 | | | | Here is another way to teach walking in a controled manner on a loose leash which is what you need for the CGC.
I would first work with your dog with the gentle leader on. Work with your dog on a LOOSE leash. When your dog starts to move to get in front of you, tighten the leash just a bit to keep him close and turn around in front of him and move in towards him to make him back up in front of you, not by pulling on the lead, but by moving into him(or herding him back-like a sheep dog does) . Keep on doing this and practicing ever day so that he learns that trying to move out in front of you means that you will turn around into and make him move back. He should start to stay more by your side or lag a little behind.
The next step is to put a flat buckle, quick clip or chain type collar (all three are allowable for the CGC test so use whatever one you like). Start working him the same way as you did with the GL. remember to always KEEP the LEASH LOOSE. Only tighten it a bit if you need to help you keep him in front of you as you turn and walk into him to make him back up. Soon, as with the GL he should walk beside you on a loose leash, or even lag a bit behind you. Both will get you a good mark for the controled walking portion of the CGC. | | | | |
