Has anyone had any luck bell training your dog to let you know when they have to go out? Hoagie just looks at me like I'm crazy ringing this bell every time I open the door.

several friends of mommys have been successful at the bell system and say it works great. mommy just took giselle fifi out a gizillion times all day and night come rain or wind, she never put paper or wee pads down we go outside no matter. crazy mommy would stand under the house awnings when it rained and giselle fifi was toooooo small to be in the fenced yard alone. me and giselle fifi know if we stand under the outside house awnings we do not get wet. most the time we make mommy come carry us in because we hate wet muddy paws.mommy does not care it worked and we potty trained great!!!puppysnoopy

Our friends have successfully trained their pit bull to ring a bell but Lily will not ring the bell. She just sullenly sits by the door and waits for us to notice her. Though she HAS rung the bell when she really really needs to go and we're taking too long to notice her... But it's a strand of bells so I think it more likely that she just bumps it accidentally. wink

Im trying to train Beef to do the bell thing. hes only 4 months & fantastically crate trained, tho we're working on the house trained part now... hes got to the point where he goes by the door at least when he needs to go out..
i combine the bell with saying "outside" and using the clicker while making him scratch the door, ringing the bell...

hoping for the best!

Well, I wrote a response and it disappeared while I was typing so please disregard if you get two from me! I taught my half Boston, Lola, to ring bells in one afternoon. She also rings them if she wants to play ball with us in the basement. That was two years ago and she still uses them. My daughters dog was here for a week recently and she learned to ring the bells in two days by watching Lola. Pretty good and not something we would have ever imagined from that dog. Mrs. Bean does not know how to use them yet and has not copied Lola in anything. But Mrs Bean can hold it forever so why learn to ring bells ;o) ?

I gave up on bell training they thought it was a toy and would yank it from the door and they broke my vertical blinds doing it. I find that if I keep on a schedule with my two bostons we don't have accidents. Only time we have problems is when Daddy doesn't mow the yard. My two don't like tall grass touching their under bellies. They have very sensitive skin. I also have them crate trained which I find to be the best method otherwise I wouldn't have any bills or pillows. They LOVE to tear everything up when we aren't around to supervise them. Does anyone else have trust issues with their bostons??? Or am I the only one?snoopy

Mrs. Bean is a food theif and will get on top of the table if a chair is left out. Lola will rip up any paper she gets hold of, and especially loves to destroy cardboard boxes. I think I could trust them alone in the house because when I leave they sleep, even is someone else is here. But to give myself some peace of mind I crate them when I am away.

keep it up-
we have a bell
Lola never rings it
well, not yet smile

my aunt has to wheatons and it worked with them
just be consistent
i have lola go up to it and i use her nose or paw to make it jingle
i also say "lola go potty?"
she knows that!
she will also go by the door if she has to go-
at least she knows which way we go to get to the grass smile
just keep it up
one day it will ring and you will be so surprised- and then praise like crazy

Holy cow!!!

So, Mom and Dad have been making me and my brother his the bells to go out. They decided to renew their efforts after reading these posts about persistance. Anyway, last night I totally rang the bells to go out! Mom was standing by the door, so I haven't yet figured out that the call of the bells can summon my parents from other rooms, but she wasn't holding a treat or anything over the bells like she usually does, it was all me. I'll let you know how this whole bell training thing goes, but Mom is feeling very encouraged today. cheer
