Hi Guys.

I'm new to Catster and to having diabetes.

Mom just found Catster on Wednesday; the same day we got my diagnosis.

I am newly diagnosed, too. I have been on insulin for 3 and a half days so far and seem to be acting like myself again. I don't really like the 'wet' food, though, as I have never had it before and it is new to me. My vet has me on Purina DM. Any ideas on how to persuade me that it is delicious?

Hi Tweek and Pumpkin!!

I've been a diabetic and on insulin since 2005, so believe me, it's something manageable. (and I have megacolon, too.)

Pumpkin - I used to be on DM, and I thought it was great. 'Course, I think any food on the planet is great....

Glad to meet you, Tweek and Pumpkin!

Welcome, Tweek and Pumpkin! wave

I've been diabetic for a few years now, too, and am doing well. Have put on some weight, but that might just be because I'm an old man now, MOL!

Blech. Purina DMsilenced It's not the best food for diabetics. The canned is better than the dry and the ingredients of both are icky. The key on diet is low carbs, preferably 10% or less. Many commercially available canned foods are less than 10% and are inexpensive, like Fancy Feast al the way up tp premium foods. Perhaps you can start a low carb grain-free canned food only diet? There are 3 low carb dry foods (Wellness CORE, Nature's Variety Raw Instinct, and Innova EVO) but even these may keep blood glucose levels high in some sensitive cats.

The main group page has the links to the canned and dry food charts so your Human can find foods that are low carb.

We agree - DM is not the best food for diabetics. It was made because many humans insisted on it. The dry is the worst. Mom is friends with the Vet who invented it - and she thinks it's junk.

Many of these diets are sold to the Vets through sheer marketing of the manufacturers.

i forgot to mention, i get 1/4 cup of my "old" dry and 1.5 oz wet right now.

We're trying to "ease" me into the new food...as to not aggravate my bladder.

Meows Tweek,

Dry food is yucky for us. I am not allowed any.

Hmm never heard of Friskies being good for Diabetics - that's interesting. You may like Fancy Feast - it's good for us - and it tastes yum!
