Did anyone else see this coming? JK Rowling released the news.. what do you pups think?

I personally think it makes sense, and I'm glad she left it out of the books

They were talking about it on the radio when I got into the car to come home yesterday. So of course I ran home and checked out Leaky Cauldron ... and sure enough!

I have to say, I really didn't see that coming. Maybe because I wasn't actively looking for clues. It totally makes sense, though. Did anyone read the transcript on Leaky? The way she explained it ... like if a child was reading it, they would only view it as if Grindewald was a sort of idol ... but if an open-minded adult were to read it they would see the infatuation aspect.

I guess the first time I read book 7 I was reading as if I were a child. BOL Totally didn't get it! But I'm about 3/4 the way through book 7 for the second time (I had to take a bit of a break and am slowly reading it the second time around ... think I had to grieve a bit before I could get back into it) and approaching the "tell tale" moment so will definitely be reading it in a new light this time around.

I'm glad she did it ... just adds another aspect to the story. I am definitely interested in re-reading the whole series again but with this new thought in my head and see what I get out of it. But I am glad she didn't outright announce that he is gay, though ... I think it really would have changed public perception of the series, and sadly, probably not in a good way.

Also loved the bits of background info she gave in the Leaky transcript! way to go

Good points Gio!

I saw it coming.. but only slightly...I think it makes it so much better!!

I fear that if she had have mentioned it in the books.. speculations would have been made about Dumbledore and Harryconfused and that would have been horrible..

But GOoo Gay Dumbledore!cheercheerI definetly aprove

That was one of my first thoughts when I heard it, Buddy!! About Dumbledore and Harry.

I think JKR wanted to really cement that fatherly relationship ... that Dumbledore loved Harry in a way that a father would love a son, not intimate love. If she had mentioned the Dumbledore is gay thing earlier, then I think some people really would have misread the relationship as a pedophilic one instead of the paternal one that it was. Sad that the concept of a homosexual man loving a male child as a father isn't really an accepted idea. But if people had their panties in a knot about the whole witchcraft thing calling it satanic, I really think the book burning fires would have been roaring if the gay situation came to light.

In an interview in Toronto the other day, JKR further expanded that she initially realized that Dumbledore was gay just prior to the actual release of Philosopher's Stone. So right back at the very beginning!

Buddy, can I ask ... What clued you in to make you suspect that Dumbledore was gay? I mean, it really REALLY hit me as a total surprise! Not a bad surprise, as I have said already, I'm happy that she's done it and totally understand her reasons for revealing it the way she did. But I didn't even kinda sorta maybe suspect it through all my readings of the series. What was it that clued you off? I'm really eager to start back at book 1 again and see if I notice things that I previously missed ... but thinking back, I really can't think of any situations that really pop out to me that I may have misinterpreted but that would have given a few clues away.

Personally, I don't know that it really matters. I guess that's just me, though. I'm sure J.K. has her reasons for announcing it but it doesn't seem like something important to me. I dunno how to explain how I view it. . .but it almost seems like a 'just because' thing.

I know what you are saying Risa, a lot of my friends have expressed that too. It does seem a little bit besides the point, but fans were asking for more, so she gave them more!big grin

I've really been wracking my brains over this one ... trying to think back to books 1-6 and think of places or situations where Dumbledore being gay may have come up. And really, besides the Grindewald thing, I can't think of anything! We never really learn enough about him to even consider what his sexual preferences are.

I totally see where you are coming from Ris. I think it's a neat aspect in how we view Dumbledore's relationship with Grindewald, but as for how it affects the whole story line ... I don't think it does. And regardless how people understand his relationship with Grindewald ... either as a love interest or a best friend, the outcome is still the same as far as the story is concerned.

It does make me curious as to how the whole Dumbledore v. Grindewald show-down actually took place, though. Imagine the turmoil that Dumbledore would be going through internally realizing that this person that he has been infatuated with for years is evil and dangerous, and that he is the only person, or the best person, to stop him. Maybe adds a bit to why Dumbledore is so secretive ... last time he allowed himself to get close to and open up to a person, that person turned evil and he had to defeat him. Might give ya a bit of a complex! BOL

Okay, now I've got to hunt down my books(which are packed!) and reread the entire series! Of course, with the fresh viewpoint, it'll be fun!
The first time someone told me what she'd said, I thought back and just said, "Yeah, okay, that makes sense."
But now I really do need to go spot the moments it shows. Just because.
