 | | | | That was one of my first thoughts when I heard it, Buddy!! About Dumbledore and Harry.
I think JKR wanted to really cement that fatherly relationship ... that Dumbledore loved Harry in a way that a father would love a son, not intimate love. If she had mentioned the Dumbledore is gay thing earlier, then I think some people really would have misread the relationship as a pedophilic one instead of the paternal one that it was. Sad that the concept of a homosexual man loving a male child as a father isn't really an accepted idea. But if people had their panties in a knot about the whole witchcraft thing calling it satanic, I really think the book burning fires would have been roaring if the gay situation came to light.
In an interview in Toronto the other day, JKR further expanded that she initially realized that Dumbledore was gay just prior to the actual release of Philosopher's Stone. So right back at the very beginning!
Buddy, can I ask ... What clued you in to make you suspect that Dumbledore was gay? I mean, it really REALLY hit me as a total surprise! Not a bad surprise, as I have said already, I'm happy that she's done it and totally understand her reasons for revealing it the way she did. But I didn't even kinda sorta maybe suspect it through all my readings of the series. What was it that clued you off? I'm really eager to start back at book 1 again and see if I notice things that I previously missed ... but thinking back, I really can't think of any situations that really pop out to me that I may have misinterpreted but that would have given a few clues away. | | | | |
