Labradoodles, Puggles, Charlee Bears...What do you think about these newly created breeds?
With so many well-established breeds and so many dogs in shelters, what are these people thinking?! Are they really tinkering to make money?
Or, is creating a new breed a great way of keeping dogs genetically sound?
Create them, or loathe them, we'd love to hear you bark.
We expect a lively discussion, but remember good manners. Any personal attacks won't be posted.
Defend your designer breed today! Bark your objection today!

Hey Rosa,

I moved your topic into this area of the website so we could all respond and read the responses of others in one area. Hope that's okay!

I strongly object to the last line of your post BARK YOUR OBJECTION HERE! Does one have to object to designer dogs to be a member of this group? I am a designer dog, I am a Bichonpoo. No one has ever met a sweeter, more gentle natured and good tempered dog than me. My mommy's landlord told her she could ONLY have a small dog. He said 10 lbs or under. Mommy also has asthma and barely is able to survive living with my cat sister Friday. So now she needed two things: A small dog and a dog that wasn't going to be bothersome to her allergies. She also wanted a puppy that she could train from day 1 to be a therapy dog and helpful to her. She has multiple sclerosis. Mommy checked the local shelters and all the puppies were Shepherd mixes, pit mixes, lab mixes - all big dog mixes. None of the shelters had any poodles or small breed puppies. After a lot of research mommy decided on a poo mix. At first she was going to get a Maltipoo. Mommy also didn't want a puppy mill puppy. All of these things were well thought out and researched. In the end mommy found a breeder that only bred small breed poo mixes. The breeder offered me to mom for a good price after hearing mom's story. He said that I was sweet and loveable. Mommy has owned many mixed breed shelter dogs over the years and probably would have gotten another shelter dog had she found the right breed. Unable to do this she made the decision to purchase me. Not all designer dogs are from puppy mills. There are some legitimate breeders. Poo mixes are wonderful dogs. I am hypoallergenic mom has never had a problem with my hair. I also don't shed so mommy doesn't have dog hair all over her small apartment. A good friend of mine asked me to join this group. I love and respect my friend and really would like to stay in this group but NOT if it is going to bash designer dogs. I am not a bad puppy. I am a very good girl and mommy loves me more than anything else in this world. So you will not find me voiceing any objections here to designer dogs only voiceing objections to pups that hate designer dogs as a whole without getting to know them individually. I hope that I can stay in this group and make lots of friends and no one will condemn me because of my breed.

Actually the last line states..."defend your designer dogs or Bark your objections"....so your post is defending your designer dog.

The only reason our friend Rosa posted this was to encourage a little communication between our fellow dog lovers; not to offend anyone, which it seems we have done...SORRY!

We welcome you to our group and LOVE your story. I had a sister who was a cockapoo, but she unfortunately past away last year. My Mom and Dad have a painting of her in their office.

So, we share the same point of view as you in your post for the same reasons. The only time I don't like the designer dog thing is when the purpose is not for a happier, healthier dog but when people try to create a different breed just because it might be cute.

For example, a puggle has no logical reason for being a mix...maybe a puggle is in our group and can tell us what the benefits are beyond being adorable. Just because I don't like that they mix this breed doesn't mean I don't think they are cute as can be and loving pets...its more the reason and purpose behind it.

I am glad that you cleared things up. My pal Bailey pawmailed me also. He is a designer dog and says he has been accepted fully by the group. I hope that I will make lots of friends here.

I don't disagree with the dogs I disagree with the term. What is wrong with mixes? My Grandma's dog is a German Shepard, Husky, Greyhound mix. Should someone have called her a Shepskyhound and sold her for a lot of money? Well, the point is moot because Grandma found her by the side of the road but you get what I'm saying. To call them Designer Dogs is to imply that they are somehow superior to other dogs, be they purebreds or mixes. It created an environment where people were spending a lot of money just to have the "dog of the day." I think this fad is fostering a flurry of activity in the puppy mill world. They can stuff all kinds of different dogs in a single cage and sell the offspring for even more money than they could before.
That's where I get angry. I'm sure there are some responsible breeders out there who have very good reasons for the mixes, strengthening of bloodlines among them. But I fear the title has caused more pain than benefits.

I'm with ya Lilly...I don't see anything wrong with a mix but the "FAD" aspect of it gets us in trouble. And it opens the doors to a lot of people who don't know what they are doing. As for the dogs, its never their fault and many come out being wonderful, playful pups.

Thanks for joining and participating in the group!

Yea I'm concerned about all the pups once the "fad" dies out. I have a feeling that there will be a lot of homeless pups out there. My mom has a cockapoo and loves it! I don't think anything is wrong with these mixes out there. In fact, those dogs may be healthier that the purebreds. I think the designer dogs can sometimes meet needs of their owners that other dog breeds can't. So I'm all for it. Now I don't exactly agree with some of the costs however. I can't see paying more for a mixed breed dog, than a pure bred. That kinda gets me. But its up to the breeder and buyer. Just a little weird to me. So yea, I don't think there is anything wrong with mixed breeds or the breeders who bring them into the world. They can do things for people that other pure breeds can't. But I just hope in a few years when the craze for these designer pups dies out, that we don't see an overabundance of them in the shelters.
