STORY: This is the story of Tuff, our Catahoula (mix?). My wife, a photographer, found a puppy on a remote country road while out taking photos. There were no homes nearby and the pup had a very large open wound on his left rear hind quarter and a deep cut near his anus and testicles. He was malnourished and covered in mud. She took the very friendly pup to our vet. His prognosis was iffy at best. The vet feared the deep cut may have compromised his urinary tract or large instines if not both and that the wound could become septic. He gave the pup a 50/50 shot at survival. Despite the odds and the cost of treatment we brought the puppy home with an array of pills and ointments. Our vet said the puppy was between 2 - 3 months old and appeared to be a Catahoula. We had never heard of a Catahoula. The vet said that if he was able to urinate and have bowel movements within 3 days that there was a good chance he would indeed survive. If not, then the best thing would be to have him put down rather than suffer through the septic shock and infection that would likely follow before dying. We got the puppy home, cleaned him up and began treating his wounds. We kept him in our bathroom to isolate him from our three cats who were not to happy about having a strange animal in their house. The beautifully colored puppy with one light gray marbled eye and one brown marbled eye quickly captured our hearts despite trying not to get too attached to him. To our relief, he began urinating the next day and having bowel movements within a little over two days. He continued to progress and after about a week we took him back to the vet for another checkup. The very large open wound that covered almost his entire left rear hindquarter had a flap of skin that had partially grown back into place but had some left that needed to be removed. The vet told us it looked like the puppy was out of the woods and would make a full recovery minus some obvious scarring. At this time we decided he needed a name, and considering all he had been through in his short life, Tuff seemed to fit the bill perfectly. We kept Tuff inside for another six weeks or so to finish healing. During this time we got him pretty much house broken. And even when he couldn't make it through an entire day while my wife and I were away at work, he decided going in the tub was much better than going on the floor. It certainly made for easier cleanup. During this time he also got fairly well acquainted with the cats, though they still wanted to have little to do with him. We also began to take him into the backyard where our two other dogs resided so they could all get to know each other slowly. Baby, our 10 year old female Chow mix and undisputed ruler of the back yard was curious about the new addition but otherwise uninterested. Kind of like the cats. Max, our 1 year old male Australian Sheppard, on the other hand was elated! Max is like the Energizer Bunny and wants to play all the time. Baby was well past her playful puppy days and quickly tired of Max. Now Max had a new plaything. At this point, Max was about twice the size of Tuff and being a herder wouldn't let Tuff take a step without being all over him. We would restrain Max to allow Tuff to roam around and check things out and then allow the two to interact. The backyard visits slowly got longer over the next couple of weeks until everyone was used to the other. Then Tuff made his permanent move into the backyard. Tuff and Max became best buddies and played all day long with Baby keeping both in line when things got a bit too rambucous for her liking. Tuff of course kept growing long after Max hit his adult size of about 45 - 50 pounds. Tuff's larger size was somewhat negated by Max's greater speed and agility when it came to rough housing around. Tuff began to get protective of "his" food bowl around 6 months old. We expected this due to our research on Catahoulas and their behaviour. The only problem was "his" food bowl had long been Baby's food bowl and she wasn't interested in giving it up at first. It was at about this time that we had Tuff neutered. We hoped this would quell some of the agressive behaviour he had been starting to exhibit. Then came July 4th. People around the neighborhood started setting off firecrackers despite city ordinances. Tuff absolutely freaked out. We ended up having to bring him inside that night because we were afraid we would hurt himself trying to get through the backdoor which is a glass paned French-style door. Now he had always been kind of skittish during thunderstorms, so was Baby, so no big deal. But after July 4th his reaction to them started getting more intense. And other things began frightening him as well, generally in the evenings. Loud, out of place noises, like blowouts on the highway or the nearby machine shop purging air tanks, loud cheering from the baseball fields down the street, etc. Sometimes we have been unable to determine what exactly has upset him. Regardless of the causes his reactions caused his agression with the other dogs to ratchet up a notch and they in turn would become fearful. Tuff would also try forcing his way inside the house when these loud noises occured. He also began "expanding" his food bowl protection to the other dogs' bowls. Both Max and Baby began to loose weight as they were unable to eat without getting attacked. The eating situation, coupled with his fear of loud noises and subsequent desire to break down the backdoor to get to safety forced us to start leashing him in the evenings. While we gave him a good bit of slack to move around while leashed he would inevitably get himself wrapped around the pole the leash was attached to. Many nights he slept in the rain or unable to get to the water bucket because of getting wrapped up. A couple of weeks ago my wife went out back to let him off of the leash and found that he had managed to tangle the leash around one of his forearms during the night. His leg was swollen and he had a sore under his arm where the leash had rubbed his skin raw. We got him treated at the vet and he is fine, but now we are scared to put him on his leash again lest he injure himself further. And since we cant let him run free in the evenings we are now stuck locking him up in the garage overnight. His aggression with the other dogs continues and they rarely venture far from the backdoor these days unless my wife or I are outside to protect them from Tuff. The really sad part is by and far he is a very friendly and good natured dog. He loves to run and play and is very affectionate. He and Max still play at times but generally not for long because Tuff just plays too rough with the much smaller Max. Max, who also loves to run around the backyard rarely does anymore because Tuff will run him down in an attempt to play, but also to show his dominance. His need to maintain his dominance also leads to unprovoked attacks on both Max and Baby. My wife and I have been unable to break him of this unacceptable behavior. And as much as we hate the thought of giving Tuff up the situation is just not fair to our other dogs and at this point we have no other choice but to give Tuff up one way or another. We are hoping to find Tuff a loving home with people that know how to deal with the apparent agressiveness of the breed. Or with someone that can provide Tuff a single dog environment where he will not have to show dominance over other dogs.

Brooklyn Animal Foster Network

Breed: Dalmation/American Staffordshire Terrier
Gender: Female
Age: 11 months old
Location: Staten Island, NY
Neutered/Spayed: Yes

Profile last updated on 4/15/08

STORY: You should see her beautiful face with one blue eye and one brown, and her unique Dalma spot lining her blue eye. She has gorgeous brindle spots and the softest fur I have ever felt. She's a little shy at first but she warms up quickly and becomes a great friend to you-- she loves to be held like a baby. She is a petite little thing, extremely affectionate and full of funny quirks. She wants so badly to be near me that she has taken to hopping in the shower when I do-- and then waits patiently for me to finish. Talk about quirky!! She would love to go running with you on those early mornings and will make an inseparable companion to you and yours for years to come. I would adopt her to a family with children in a heartbeat. She loves wrestling with her foster brothers and runs like the wind in the dog run. She is well socialized and has never presented any dog, toy or food aggression. Lefty was a stray in Mt. Vernon, but is now eating well and gaining a little weight. She is spayed, up to date on shots and (now) house trained smile Contact me, Emily, to meet this little lovie: 917-292-6779 or send me PAW MAIL!cheer

May 11, 2008: MOMMA

Breed: Mountain Cur/Breed Unknown
Gender: Female
Age: 4 years old
Location: Adoptable within 100 miles of Castalian Springs, TN
Neutered/Spayed: Yes

Available for adoption after April 30, 2008

STORY: Momma had her 8 puppies in a barn & was a very good mother. However, people can be very cruel & a mean neighbor killed one of them. The nice lady who let Momma & her brood stay, adopted out 2 of them. Then one day, someone's pit bulls got loose & attacked another of the pups. Momma did her best to protect him & she was injured. The poor little guy had to be put to sleep later that day. The very next day, we got the other 4 pups into rescue, but they could not take Momma. So Momma has been with us since. She has been vaccinated, spayed & tested negative for heartworms. Her injuries from the pits were not life threatening & she has fully recovered.

Breed: Pekingese
Gender: Female
Age: 10 years old
Location: Adoptable within 300 miles of Morris, PA
Neutered/Spayed: Yes

Profile last updated on 5/14/08

STORY: This precious peke mix with the "Flying Nun" ears is a senior in reasonably good health that needs a loving retirement home. Current on her vaccinations, micro chipped and spayed many years ago, this little 9 lb gal obviously was cared for and the queen of a household for many years - how she ended up as an unclaimed stray in a large city shelter is beyond us. None-the-less in her later years, Nilla finds herself in need of a home. Although her hearing and vision are not the best anymore and her eyes do require drops a few times daily (not difficult to apply, being she's very cooperative since it makes her eyes feel better), she would be a wonderful companion for a quiet adult household and has excellent potty manners. Prancing around in excitement, it's obvious Nilla loves her food and wants everyone to know that being toothless is not bad at all when she is fed yummy food and her cute little tongue barely even sticks out! She likes being with her person and follows her foster mommy about where ever she goes, wanting to be near her even if it's just snoozing nearby in a donut bed. She is lovingly referred to as The Curmudgeon, when she grumbles about all the other dogs running around her or if they horn in on her space. Although she loves her foster mommy dearly, a less busy household would be more ideal for a lady of her character . With a soft luxurious coat that many a younger dog would envy, Nilla seems to really enjoy being brushed and groomed - except for the nail trims which are adamently protested. PLEASE HELP US to help more dogs by adopting or fostering one of our sweet older babies. Seniors and special needs kids are not expensive to adopt and have so much love and joy to give.hug

STORY: From his Adopt 08 Contest Entryblue dog

Beginnings 7/07 - 10/07

Actually I began life on four wheels just like most of us. I am hardly more than a pup now, yet my puppyhood seems a lifetime ago, and a world away. I can't remember Mom's name, don't even recall how many brothers and sisters I had. My first couple of months were just normal puppy stuff that any country dog could bark about.

One fine autumn morning me and my pals were out exploring. We had been straying farther and farther from home base over the past several weeks. So many new things to discover! One of us discovered rolling in cow pies, another found a neat creek to splash in. It was a time of fun and exploration.

This day, we discovered what I later learned was called; 'The Road', and 'Cars'. Now we had all chased off a rabbit or two before, but these Car things were fast! They made funny blarring noises when we chased them too. We were having a blast trying to catch one, and had no clue of the danger. I went after one of them and before I knew it, I was attacked! It bit the heck out of my leg. It felt like it was on fire it hurt so much! The bone was showing through my skin. I don't even know how I made it back home, I just did it.

That was when I discovered not all packs took good care of their members. My humans did nothing! No Veternarian, no nothing, not even a bullet to put me out of my growing misery. Over a week went by and my leg kept getting worse. I grew sick and feverish. There came a time when I couldn't even get up to eat or drink.

Finally my humans took action. The whole litter was loaded up in the car and off we went... TO THE POUND!

I arrived at the shelter as a bag of skin and bones with a compound fracture of my back leg ozzing pus. My foot was swollen to twice it's normal size, and I smelled of sickness and infection.

Now the Pound is not a nice place. They have a tough job to do, that no one else wants, which is to house and dispose of unwanted animals. Some Pounds have money and doctors, and some don't. This one had neither. I shudder to type this, but the kindest thing they could have done would to have been to euthanize me right away. Obviously that didn't happen since I am still barking this, so just what did they do?

Nothing!

I was kept in a common pen with my siblings, too week to move as they romped all over me. Once again, humans didn't keep their end of the bargan. see (The Pact of Fire) My time in this world was running out. I was fading away and often dreamed of The Bridge.

The next day my new life began.

GOOD with kids and other dogs

STORY: Pokey the Puppy is all grown up! And then kept growing! Pokey is a sweet little Dane girl. She is mellow and well behaved. She is affectionate and just wants a couch to sleep on and a lap to rest her head on. POKEY DOES NOT GET ALONG WITH OTHER DANES, but she visits a Doggy Daycare regularly so she does get along with most other dogs. Pokey's owner was diagnosed with cancer. Although it broke her heart to have to give Pokey up for adoption, she could no longer care for her. Being a Great Dane, she needs to go to a home familiar with the breed - giant breeds are awesome dogs, but they do have short life spans.hug
