As Lily's vision gets worse she is more prone to being startled when she notices something around her, like the door to the tv cabinet or one of her classmates in obedience class, she tends to act agressively towards it. I put her on her side when she does this till she calms down but I was wondering if anyone else had had a similar experience and if they had any tips for how to handle it?

rio still startles on occasion, but not really aggressively so i can't help you much there. i think she relys on her dog sister to moniter what is going on. occasionally she'll jump up and bark if blossoms bark sounds like something she needs to be alerted to.

the instructors may be able to help with some ideas...i find calmness and repitition helpful. rio was very nervous about creeks and crossing them and i just kept encouraging her to just walk through the water with us and now she wades into the creeks and even the ocean. paws....rio

Mr BARNEY is partly Deaf too but once in a while he hears things and will bark or he will see movement out of the corner of his eye and Bark at something. He has a GREAT SNIFFER.

rio's nose works overtime as well. was amazed the other day as she started off towards a smell...by now i knew immediately it was a moose by how she was acting. luckily for us the moose was almost 200 yards away. we had two other dogs with us and neither ever noticed there was the moose. i only knew because of rio....then i saw the moose in the distance after paying close attention.

some how i think rio knows when she is in open space. seems like when she gets onto a lake she just starts running in cirlces..it's like she knows there are no obstacles and she can just get silly and romp. ( the lakes are frozen here by the way...just thought that may have sounded odd. laugh out loud )

Yes my Magpie can tell when she is at the park and she will trot along a a brisk pace, I wish she would run sometime but I guess that is just too scary.

when i get the zoomies mom has to try and warn everyone in the area! i weigh around 120 pounds and mom fears i'll take someone out. i almost took out her knee the other day....oops! shrug the zoomies are just such a fun way to show everyone just how happy a dog i am though! life is good!

Hey all you sweeties. Mummy has just found this group. Lily, I am so sorry you get startledcloud 9 Mummy really isn't sure how blind I am or whether it is that I just know where things are and I can see shapes - she thinks that. I don't get started by things I can see it is usually loud noises. I was never bothered by them before but if mummy drops something I just jump up. My eyes a while ago were both totally blue but now one of them is turning black again. Mummy's not really sure why or if I can see any bettershrug

My mom just stumbled upon this site and glad she found itway to go

I lost my site about 7 years ago and no one would ever believe it that I was blind. I would still run like a puppy while mom would have my harness on me. And even without it I would still run when I got excited when mom was pretending to chase me. snoopy

She would keep a close eye on me so I wouldn't bump into anything and hurt myself. I would still throw my toys at her and she would give them back and that would go on for about 10 or 15 minutesdog

I got scared at every little sound that mom would make. She always tried not to drop anything and always said she was sorry when she did. I would just take off running a few steps until I realized I better not go too far or I will crash. Even today, I'm gone and she still says "sorry Casey, sweetheart" everytime she makes a noise

Hi Lilywave you are a precious little thing and I hope that you don't have to wear that lampshade ALL the timeeek I had to wear one when I had one of my eyes removedfrown Mom took it off every chance she had way to go

I am new here, and I am writing because I want to know how to help my parents dog that has gone blind. Mom said she won't put him down because she's blind too!

i think the best thing to do to help us blind pups out is to develope trust and some commands to aide us. i'm learning more and more cues that help me out. i often walk off leash and that has really helped me get more confident. mom uses cue words like "careful" if there is an obstacle ahead, or "over" if i must get over an obstacle, or "follow" if the trail is rough and i should stay right at mom's feet. people often are shocked that i can't see as i do so well off leash.

we're very happy to see new faces and new life to this very important group and thank dogster for highlighting it so that others may find it!
