My mommy is thinking about getting another dog in the future, and was wondering about an Springer Spaniel... What is life like with a Springer? What are they like as a breed? How are they with other dogs? cats? How are they with general obedience training ( I am a terrier and my mommy can't let me off leash or i run away)? I would appreciate any info you can give me on Springer Spaniels!!!

Well, Mom tells people I'm "not an entry-level dog" (thanks, Mom!) She loves my energy; I get along well with almost every dog we meet, and she's extremely happy about that! (She had a rescued golden retriever who was very sweet to people, but was often a total bitch to dogs.)

I'm a rescue; Mom adopted me from a shelter where I had come in as a stray; I have "issues" she hopes to work through. She has slowly been working with me and I'm a "quick study" at learning commands. She feels I'm at a level at which she can handle me--I was like a "wild animal" when I first came home with her, she says! She's getting the help of an outside trainer, and at least three "experts" have evaluated me and said, "This is a great dog!"

She specifically picked me because she did a search on "springer spaniels" on Petfinder, and I came up. All in all, she's happy she got me, and she'd do it again (the short answer is yes!)

Max is a very relaxed guy for a Springer and has very little prey drive. He is very affectionate and always somewhere near me - often in my lap! He has no problems with cats or dogs - in fact if you look at one of his pics he is getting one of his many face cleanings from one of our cats, Oliver. They often lay right next to each other. He is smart and funny and I cannot imagine my life without him. Springers do benefit from some obedience training. Max can be stubborn and I frankly do not trust him much off leash. But that is him and we are working on it. He has never chewed anything up in the house (ohh...except if you leave a paper towel out somewhere). He is crate trained and you can find him there if he gets upset or scared (if he isn't in my lap or behind me on the couch...he is a little bit of a coward). He is great around kids and loves giving kisses to my nearly five-year-old granddaughter. We take him everywhere!

Springers are great with children, and cats but birds are not recommended. They have a great memory, very sensitive to their people's/packmates needs. I think they really like to work, and sharpen their intellect, too.

If you are a high energy person who likes to romp with the dogs and take long walks or can let them play run in good space, they are a good choice.

Well, I live with a Jack Russell Terror, oops, I mean Terrier. Anyway, I'm 12 and he's 3 so I'm older and wiser. I was raised with kittens and we also have a cat in the house. I'm good off leash and I hate being on leash but I do ok with a gentle leader. My mom thinks I'm the best dog she 's ever had because I'm such an all around great dog, and I think she's right. I haven't had any health problems except for a dry eye that I get an eye drop each morning in. Other wise I'm good to go, and I don't stop unless my people rein me in. Slow is not a speed I like. Full of energy and true to the breed of having extreme stamina.

snoopy My best friend so far is Jin, she is a little tiny shih tzu and we have so much fun.. I never get to rough and I always play nice, and gentle...

I am a very relaxed pup, easy going, love to lay around..

Here is what ma says :

"I have owned 3 springers before Emma and it has been 13 years since I had a springer and I don't remember them being this mellow...LOL.. However, have to watch it and give plenty of chew toys...They are BIG chewers.. I remember my last springer, KC, chewed a hole right through a couch!!!

Emma likes to chew also, but as long as I keep her busy with other things, like rawhide bones, and touch toys like the wubba wubba she is fine.. By the way, I found the wubba on a web site where I buy my dog collars (Lupine's) and they have several sizes, colors and types.. even ones just for the water..They are awesome, and very reasonable.. I am ordering a couple more since I have a large fur kid family

Springers are smart and a lot of fun and also very very loving dogs.. I don't think you will be sorry if you get one..."

Sadly, though...

Jerry has proven to be too high-energy for a one-bedroom apartment and really not a city dog. (Case in point: whenever we leave the house, he's on instant squirrel-and-skateboard patrol.)

So it's a heart-wrenching decision, but I'm re-homing him. He'll be leaving New York on Saturday and going to live with a couple in Pennsylvania who have land and used to breed springers. They have a retired brood bitch who needs company.

This has been basically a ten-month foster for Jerry, and I think he'll be much happier in Pennsylvania; within a few years he might have adjusted to New York life, but I bet he'll have an easier time in PA.

Springers jump- for joy.

I have a west highland terrier and an ess. They get along well. Both my dogs are good off leash. My ess, Cadence, is mellow in the house, but active outdoors. Ess puppies are usually very mouthy when young and chow hounds. She has never destroyed anything unless it was given to her. She is VERY food motivated. She learned the routine of the house quickly. If you read my motto it is springer's jump for joy. The reason being it has been very hard for me to teach her not to jump up on people when they first come into the house or when we wake up, and she is sooo excited to see the day is starting. She follows me around everywhere, she is even tempered, she is a happy joker and at times she looks very serious. She is gentle and kind. IMO nothing is cuter than an ESS puppy and nothing more beautiful than an ess adult. You need to clean their ears weekly, keep the hair trimmed on the underside of the paws, and thin out the hair on the tail and cut the long hair on the end of the tail between trips to the groomer. I usually take her when her hair on her chest gets long every 3-4months. I really love Cadence. I have loved a lot of dogs in my life, but right now the 2 dogs I have are the best dogs I have ever owned. It is odd that I got my once in a lifetime best dog, as a couple...lol.

Springers are great dogs, I have 3, my smallest springer is 38 lbs the largest 47. They love the outdoors and need plenty of room to run and exercise. They are friendly dogs, and require very little maintenance. A weekly brushing keeps their coat looking good. Mine love the water and in the summer I always have a kiddie pool for them. They are easily trainable and very loveable.
