Phone Number: 509 762-9616 although it is rarely able to be answered because they are so short handed. Messages are listened to remotely by a Board Member and then emailed to Connie, the shelter manager. This is a temporary fix.
Directions: Coming from I-90 East (from Seattle) take second Moses Lake exit, turn left at light (Coming from Spokane, take first ML exit and turn right). Follow through a couple lights until exit to Highway 17 on right towards Ephrata.
Follow until exit onto Patton Blvd/Big Bend/Airport, exits right, no left turn.
Follow Patton past water tower and turn right at fire station (blue animal shelter road sign with arrow).
Follow past Buddy's drivein, road curves left, at 4 way stop take right onto Randolph. Randolph goes past airport runways, curves left, then there is sewage plant on right and shelter right after it.
Shelter is open from noon to 6 Tuesday through Saturday but someone is there from 9-6 Monday through Saturday and can schedule someone to be there ANY time, day or night (myself, another board member and Connie all live close by).
I tried to put together a "wish list" and it is really hard when there is so much we KNOW we need, but most of it will come with time, effort and experience. Some of these may sound odd, but these are the top 15 things we really need.
1. VOLUNTEERS
We need a few steady volunteers to come regularly between 12 and 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday to accompany people through the shelter and show them animals so that Connie can do paperwork and handle the actual adoptions/intake/phone or a steady volunteer we can train to handle the phones/etc while Connie is helping people with animals.
We need help between 9 a.m. and noon cleaning the cat room and isolation. To do this correctly takes one person 2-3 hours with a "full house."
We need someone to help take pictures and write up information on dogs and cats to be uploaded to Petfinder.
We need someone to help us coordinate, recruit and manage volunteers and to train someone locally to continue this.
We need someone to pull weeds and scrape out a large back fenced area and run so that dogs can be walked without getting thorns in their feet and so that we have a large area to let a dog loose in, especially so that a potential adopter can interact with the dog off of its leash.
We need someone to help with coordinating rescues/transports to other areas. (I hope to be able to do this once we get a full staff because it's really cool)
2. We need carriers. We have a couple small carriers and that is IT. Nothing to transport medium or large dogs in.
3. We need a metal examination table for the med room.
4. We need our locks rekeyed.
5. We need Grant County to sign a contract so that we can lower the surrender fee from individual County residents.
6. We need to paint the building, inside and out. We need paint.
7. We need an alternative to bleach for cleaning the cat room and a way to get it without incurring large costs.
8. We need more board members that will get out there with us to help DO SOMETHING. There are 8 of us, 6 that can volunteer at the shelter now, and 4 that do it on a regular basis, but we all have regular jobs too and it's getting harder to leave our lives on "hold" and not burnout.
9. We need help to get the word out there that we have taken on the shelter and we want to make a difference.
10. We need a low cost spay/neuter clinic or day to get more low income families to spay/neuter their existing pets.
11. We need web hosting to get our website set up, we have already gotten our domain names.
12. *I* need written policies and procedures on employee safety for L&I and on animal control policies and procedures for the Board of Pharmacy and I can't find a document to use as a starting point.
13. We need financial contributions to help us make up for the budget deficit if the County does not sign the contract, we will be running $14,000 negative without hiring the third staff person we DESPERATELY need.
14. We need our sign painted with our logo and name. We have the sign.
15. We need a truck with a canopy or van or some vehicle that can be there for staff/manager to transport animals to the vet.
