This argument has been widely heard in regards to condoms in the schools. Do we offer good abstinence education and offer condoms to keep our children safe or do we just offer education because offering condoms sends a message of approval.

Molly Inspires is taking this situation to the dogs. In June, a new webbased system allowing people to critique their dog merchant will be up and running.

So what do you think?

Are they encouraging people to buy and not adopt?

Will the "why adopt" education materials and rescue links be enough to balance the site?

Do you think this site will help put irresponsible breeders out of business by giving people a voice?

MIF wants to hear from you! The public's support will equal success. Success is defined by stopping pet stores, internet suppliers, backyard breeders and puppy mills from making money on selling puppies!

Please read the posts on the Molly Inspires Foundation Group page or the MIF website if you would like more information.

I think education is a great idea. We both came from pet stores and even though, mommy is glad she has us, she may have made a different decision if she had more information beforehand.

Daddy never wanted dogs even though he liked them and after 21 years of marriage he finally told mommy that he saw me in the pet store in the mall mommy and he were working in. They played with me a couple of times and mommy looked on the internet to investigate the breed. They needed a small dog so they could take me back and forth with them to work and keep me in the back office area. I was perfect.

Mommy's family always went to the Humane Society to get dogs when she was little and she could not imagine paying that much for a puppy but ended up giving in because she wanted a dog so badly.

Since I came into her life, she has gotten into forums and learned more about dogs and breeding and what you should look for. If she had that info beforehand, she would have made a different decision.

And, of course, adopting and rescuing are always the best options. Some day we would like to foster Min Pins. Lots of people buy them from pet stores not knowing what they are getting into and can't handle them.

She has enjoyed us so much that she would like to give back to our canine friends in some way. Helping to do away with breeders that use their dogs as breeding machines and not as family members would be a good start. We think there is a place for good small breeders so you don't totally lose the uniqueness of each breed. But we all know what puppy mills do and we would love to help stop them. Alone, we do not have the time, money or means to make a dent but together we may just be able to make improvements in some animals lives.

We would also be happy if our next dog was a rescue. There are so many deserving pups out there looking for a good home.

Love the concept of this group. Thanks for the invite.

Georgie,

I'm happy to have you along on the journey to stop irresponsible breeding. My sister, Molly and I are fighting to make a difference to help put an end to irresponsible breeding.

TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!!!

My mommy volunteers at a local animal shelter where she sees the devastating effects of puppy mills on an all too frequent basis. Greed is the motivation for these people. Although it is a no kill shelter, some of the shih tzus & chihuahuas were so sickly that they had to be humanly euthanized. If people want a certain breed of dog, then be willing to pay the price through a reputable, humane breeder. I am a product of a puppy mill, but thankfully I was just a teeny, tiny baby when my mom got me, so I didn't suffer any sort of lasting health effects. The owner of the puppy mill dumped me & my litter mates off at the shelter when he found out that not all of us were pure pred chihuahuas, like my sister Hayley. No living creature should have to endure the cruelty of a mill.

Rhonda,

I hope you know who the Puppy Mill is so you can register them on the site. Let's make sure no one buys from them...

We're happy to hear you're healthy and have a wonderful life. And your Mom is a super star for helping other dogs who need it.

The puppy mill was actually an old trailer filled with approx. 300 dogs! There were up to 2 moms & 20 pups per FILTHY cage! My mom's friend who runs the Action for Animals shelter in Pittsburgh decided to do a bit of detective work after the puppy mill owner began dropping off mixed breed dogs at the shelter on a regular basis. She followed them to a trailer park & was told by one of the neighbors about how horrid the conditions were. She immediately called the police & the owner & his wife (who actually lived in a nice clean home undoubtedly paid for by the puppy mills profits) were arrested, paid a $10,000 fine, & were not permitted to own any more dogs or cats. They moved away soon thereafter. We can only hope & pray that they're not doing this somewhere else. The police estimated that they made close to $10,000 per month, shipping their sickly puppies all around the country. Infact, this made the local news & outraged a lot of people in 2000. We still get puppy mill dogs from much smaller operations & also from hoarders. This needs to stop! PLEASE spay or neuter your pets & if you must have a purebred dog, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! The AKC's web-site has links to reputable breeders. Also, if you answer an ad on the paper or on the internet, demand to go to where the dogs are. If the "breeder" insists on bringing the dog to you, then something is not right. This is a cause very near & dear to our hearts! Your foundation is a God-send!

I just had an idea. What if we were able to post people who were indicted on animal cruelty charges. This would be public record, right?

That way people could look people up and see if they were breaking the law? Since our website is national it would be a one stop shop rather than looking people up in every state.

The catch...How would we get the information? The only way I can think of is by people reporting them to us but they would have to submit the link to the information on a goverment page as proof?

What do you think?

My mommy discussed this with her human cousin, who is an assistant DA in Pittsburgh. Unless there is a felony charge involved, we could be sued for posting peoples names (at least in PA. He also said these laws really don't vary a whole lot throughout the country. And this type of lawsuit would be civil, which could really do some harm to Dogster or any foundations). Unfortunately, most cruelty cases are misdemeanor charges. The large puppy mills are a different situation. The one I was referring to involved felony charges & the names of those involved- Steve & Edie Mutkowski, are in the public record. These people moved out of state; their whereabouts are unknown. But given their criminal history (which involved other illegal activities besides puppy mills i.e. money laundering), I'd definitely say these 2 haven't given up their criminal enterprises & are probably operating under assumed names. I'd strongly suggest if any of these raids are happening in your area, post them here. But until we are able to obtain concrete information which won't get us sued, we need to be vigilant! ASK to see the puppy's parents, insist on seeing where the parents & their owners live, & if a "deal" on a puppy is too good to be true, then it probably is. At the shelter where mommy volunteers, there have been so many cases of dogs who had AKC papers which were forged. People just need to do their research. Also, there are so many homeless mutts who need loving families. And there are also a lot of purebred dogs, especially dalmatians & golden/lab retrievers who are brought to shelters because their owners were ignorant of the responsiblity involved with certain breeds. RESPONSIBILITY is the key! If one wants low maintenance pets, get an aquarium.

Thank you for the information and saving my Mom and our Foundation from being sued. But I had one more question. If the Foundation is not the one inputting the information but it is providing the platform for the information to be posted, is there still a case? There are so many websites out there that allow people to critique restaurants etc. Would you not be able to post a link in the comments sections that had the goverment page that showed the person was charged with animal cruelty? Obviously, I don't want my Mom to get in trouble or the foundation to be hurt in anyway so I sincerely appreciate your help.

Mom gets off work in 2 minutes so I will say this quick. This may not be the right group for me. I detest puppy mills, irresponsible breeders and think anyone who has anything to do with puppy mils should be euthanized. I will never change my mind and have been devoted to this for years. I will step on toes to get done whatever it takes and I am not so nice about it. Are you sure now that you really want me here? I can't handle animal abuse in any sense.
