I did springer rescue for a couple of years ~ basically, ESS are high energy dogs (since they are bred for hunting, they need stamina, perserverance, energy... everything that you don't necessarily need in an apartment dog unless you're a daily marathon runner.)

The younger they are, the more 'active' they are. I used to joke with people that the first time an ESS will sit down is around 6 (years old!)

Anyhow, I think you got the end of the spectrum in terms of activity and I would recommend you look for a more 'mature' ESS of 5-6 should you be in the market again.

Rescue is a good solution for this dog, the rescue will make sure that he goes into a family that can channel his energy (maybe will lots of kids playing catch with him, etc.) and that will love him as much as you do.

Well, we were meeting with a trainer for a few weeks (had signed up for a group class last summer, which he flunked) who assigned a modified NILIF (Nothing in Life is Free) program, including at least five hours of walking daily. Unfortunately, she seems to have terminated me after only one lesson, and is not returning my calls.

Jerry still has guarding issues, and is displaying a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality. I am sticking to walking him at least five hours a day, which definitely helps—particularly if I take him to the dog run. He is the most excellent player in the world, and is appropriate with all sizes of dogs, but he must not have access to dog toys.

I have him tethered most of the time in the kitchen, in an unfortunately charged area I have to pass through. Last weekend he got me good; Sunday he gave me a nasty bite when I passed by.

I now have to find a new and appropriate trainer, and borrow the money to pay for the training. On the outside I am considering re-homing him, although that would really break my heart; plus, he will be the last dog I ever have.

I'll keep checking in here to let people know the outcome.

Well, I contacted springer rescue—actually a friend of mine did—and found out they had an ex-breeder in Pennsylvania actively seeking a companion for their retired springer brood bitch. They have a lot more land than I do, and they have years of experience with springer spaniels.

This would be the best thing, and although Jerry was supposed to go yesterday, the transport didn't work out, so he'll go next weekend. It's with mixed feelings that I part with him, but since he's bitten me a few times, I'll have the scars to remind me he's better off and so am I!

Yes, we're on edge (at least Mom is) because I go tomorrow (Saturday). She knows this is the best thing, but it's going to hurt her to see me go. She's been saying goodbye to me all week and taking lots of pictures; she's also enclosed my vet records and wrote a little note to the woman who's going to get me. She's even sending a "care" package!

She just wants them to love me as much as she does.

Well, Jerry left today and I'm forbidden to communicate with the new family. I did send along a "care" package including some of his kibble to transition him off, some of his supplements, and even some kidneys on ice. I also enclosed some documents and a letter to his new mom.

I am so sad about this; he might as well have died. I know he didn't have the perfect life here, but he did get to run four times a day and I took the best care of him I knew how. He was my dog and now he's not. I'll never get another dog.

True...I'm feeling more optimistic about the whole thing, knowing he's in a better place and with room to run. In time I'd even like to foster another springer, because I'm well aware that fostering is a crucial part of saving any dog from a potentially bad situation.

I just miss him; the reason I gave him up was to do the best thing for him, rather than selfishly try to keep him because he's so gorgeous. I'd like to hear from his new people, but at this point I've done all I can.
