I thought that it would be a good idea to share what gear we use for our various activities. That way if anyone is interested in renting or purchasing equipment they can have some helpful advice on what different people prefer for different circumstances!

I use Atlas Elektra 1027 snowshoes. My husband got them for me from REI (go figure!). Along with the snowshoes I use Komperdell Thermogrip Ice Touring Poles. I tried snowshoeing once without any poles, and I MUCH prefer the use of poles!

I also use Hi-Tec Icebreaker Winter Boots while I'm snowshoeing. These boots do take a bit of wearing in, but once that's over with they're really comfortable and help to keep my feet warm.

I just bought Heffner a set of booties to help protect his feet while he's on the snow so that he won't be scraping up his pads again. The booties that I got for him are from Ruff Wear (I really like this company and besides my experiences, I've heard great things about them). We got the Bark'n Boots Grip Trex http://www.ruffwear.com/grip_trex_dog_boots?sc=2&category=11. He's only worn them a few times (and not yet in the snow), but he adjusts to them pretty quickly. These also, due to the type of sole, take a little bit of breaking in before they match the form of the dogs foot. But I do like them!

I have a great contact person for some skijoring dog gear! Heffner is going to get fitted for a harness with her next Fri.!! She's involved in the Cascade Sled Dog Team and does mushing as well as skijoring. She runs her dog pulling equipment shop through her home. You can contact her at kimtinker@teleport.com.

I haven't actually gone out skijoring with him yet, but I plan on taking him in the same general area that I've been taking him snowshoeing. Out near Clear Lake. There's a few snow parks out there. Frog Lake holds a few mushing races each year as well. So those would be good trails.

Heffner just got fitted today (none of the standard equipment fit him) and I can't wait to get all our gear!! The equipment is really sturdy, high quality stuff and I can't get over how reasonably priced it all is! For a custom fit and made x-back harness, the range is $22-$25! I'm so used to paying through the nose for anything custom that I get for him that I couldn't believe it!!

Who is your contact for Skijooring? I would love to look for gear for Bernie!

He already has Barkin Boots, though the last time we tried them on him he did seem to enjoy them and was unsure how to walk with them on (one of the funniest things I have seen!)

The company name is Skijoring Outfitters. The contact person is Kim Tinker. She sells towropes, ganglines, snaps, skijoring belts, harnesses, botties, and rope. Her number is 503-668-6739. She's great about custom fitting things!! And it's really not badly priced. A custom fit harness ranges $22-$25. Not bad at all!!

I also thought it was worth while to post a site that a friend of mine found that has SUPER cheap dog blankets!! For those of us who have short haired dogs, these come in pretty handy in the cooler weather! http://www.rods.com/p/6621,891_Polar-600D-Dog-Blanket.html If the XL can fit a dane, then they'll fit just about any other breed! And did I mention that they're CHEAP! I'm going to order one of these eventually for Heffner, but I did order him this coat http://www.rods.com/p/9173,889_Weatherbeeta-Snowflake-Dog-Rug.html because I couldn't resist and it was even CHEAPER! Anywho, they're good quality jackets and great prices!

Heffner currently has the the Bark 'n Boots Grip Trex boots by Ruff Wear (http://www.ruffwear.com/grip_trex_dog_boots?sc=2&category=11) and I totally love them for his feet. However, thinking more about the whole skijoring thing and how many people recommend that you bring extra boots for when the individual boot wears out or gets ripped, and I was a little hesitant about plunking down that much cash to be carrying around extra booties. I still plan to use them until they wear out, but I'm going to be carrying around these http://dogbooties.com/ as replacemet booties. At $2.50 per booty, that's just too great of a price to pass up!!
