Lucky me!

Shhh...I'm not fixed. Mom got me a month ago from the shelter, and rather than leave me there to get "fixed" she said she'd take me, pay a deposit, and have a doctor nearby do the surgery--less traumatic for me, and she could get a special discount coupon to have it done at the vet where she took her kittten.

Although the overwhelming majority of people recommend spaying and neutering for very valid reasons, there are reasons that leaving a dog intact is healthier for the pet; spaying or neutering a dog too early can lead to growth and development problems. (This is something nobody mentions anymore, because the pet overpopulation problem is so out-of-hand.)

Neutering is not a "cure-all" for behavior problems--or they'd probably be doing it a lot more often to humans!

Umm...actually, Mom was under the impression I wasn't fixed--it said on my Petfinder page I was intact--but as soon as she got me groomed she saw I was neutered! So she called the shelter to ask if they might refund the deposit she left with them. After several months and some badgering, they did. She then sent them an update, along with some recent pictures of me.

My Farley is finally two and I guess I can notice a slight calming in his behaviour! Last year when we first got him from the shelter and I was unable to keep up enough exercise to satisfy him, I would take him to doggie day care once or twice a week. Not only did it help socialize him, but he would come home exhausted (for an ESS, so he would lay down and yawn once in a while). He would wear out all the other dogs at the day care too. It certainly helped my sanity and kept my marriage intact

This summer we have moved on to agility classes - and now I finally have proof that he's not just psychotic - he's smart too. The classes are definately making him a better listener and I've noticed that he's much more likely to look to me for direction before "finding something to keep busy with" (aka gettting into trouble).

Good Luck!

Snickers

Human trapped in- a dog's body

Oh, I thought I was going insane with the only dog in the world who can't sit still. Snickers is 5.5 years old and still requires entertainment every day. I don't take him on walks because I hate getting in the car to go, and walking from our street is putting our lives at risk of getting hit by a car. The only thing that wears him out is when I blow bubbles for him, which he chases down. I water down the thicker bubble solutions and blow bubbles for about 30 minutes. It's great because I can do it inside if it's cold or hot outside, and I can watch TV while I do it!

Other times I use treat balls (like Kong) and stuff them. That only lasts about 5 minutes though. A trickier one I bought at the pet shop is a plexiglas bottle you stick treats in, and Snickers has to get them out.

Please, if you come across any ideas to keep our little angels busy in the house, tell me!!

Well, Jerry was re-homed two weeks ago (to Pennsylvania) and after walking him five hours every day, it's a huge, sudden change. It was on the advice of a trainer that I walked him that much; I also made modifications to his diet, but in the end I had to admit he wasn't an apartment dog.

I'm very sad without him; I fortunately have a lot of other dogs to walk, but Jerry was a special light in my life and I tried everything I could to keep him. My roommate isn't allowing me to get another dog right now, and that sucks too. I wish I would hear from the adopters, but they haven't contacted the rescue we went through.

My main point in writing this post was to say that I've heard from everyone that springers are especially high-energy dogs and it takes a lot to tire them out.
