Lola

Half-Ewok,- Half-Fruit Bat!

Hi everybody! I posted this in the grooming section of forums, but now that I've found you maybe you can help.
We just got Lola, our little furball, a couple of weeks ago.
The breeder was talking about how you groom around their eyes, and something about pulling the fur? I'm usually a pretty attentive person, but we were getting our puppy and my brain fell out of my head.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Any grooming tips for Griffs?
I know how to do the hand stripping for their backs etc., but any books, websites, advice, etc, would be fantastic!

Hi!

Your breeder was talking about "stripping" her. This is how most rough-coated terrier-type breeds are groomed, especially for the show ring. The dead hair is pulled out. If you have never done it, either get a groomer who's experienced with stripping to teach you how to do it, or ask the breeder (if she's close enough) to demonstrate for you.
Most people who have rough-coated Griffs as pets take them to a groomer about every six to eight weeks - just like a schnauzer or poodle would be groomed. But be sure you bring plenty of pictures of what Brussels Griffons haircuts should look like! Even the best groomers probably don't have many as clients! I hope this helps.

Sorry - I just read your post all the way through. There's a Griff Grooming guide available:

Hi,
I wanted to revive this topic because I wanted to know how many of you are stripping your Griffs? I just started doing that with Kuma. We went back to our breeder who was gracious enough to spend time with us teaching us. It's an interesting process, but it's been cool, so far. We got all kinds of stipping knives and pumice stones. Can we share any other tips about handstripping with each other? What other "tools" do you guys use? How do you guys keep your dog still to strip the head? Gosh... the breeder stripped his head. Right now, I'm defuzzing him and raking his loose hairs.

I didn't strip Misha. I comb his fur every other day and take him to the groomers once a month. I haven't noticed a shedding problem with him and I had a pomerian once. The comb does a real good job of picking up all the loose fur.

Definitely, shedding is not much of an issue with Kuma. I've given him tons of hugs while wearing black work clothes. I was in between shaving and stripping. I ended up deciding on stripping. I'm loving the color that is coming out of him, but it sure is time consuming.

Hi, our little Praline is only 10 weeks old. When does one generally start to strip a griff? is it painful for them? thanks

Hi,
Praline is on our friends list so I thought I would add my 2 cents on this topic. Oliver will be a year old in Sept. and I began stripping him with a stripping comb a few months ago. I wanted his hair to be redder and more course and where I strip him, it is really becoming a pretty rough red all over his back and sides. He doesnt mind at all but when I try to comb (strip)his face and head, he doesnt like it at all. The local groomer that cuts one Griffen doesnt strip but just trims it short and it begins to grow softer and more blond. I feel that at least my dog is getting the benefit of some of the show dog look but is what you might say is still curly and more natural. The other bonus is that with 4 dogs it is too costly to go to a professional groomer.

Hi Praline,
To tell you the truth, I have no idea when is the earliest you can start. Howeer, I heard that the sooner that you begin handstripping, the easier it will be for Praline to get used to it. It won't hurt Praline at all. When Iwork on Kuma's back, he naps. Kuma has blonde/silver hair on top of his head. I see some reddish strands coming out, but it's still very silver. His back is getting very red. I love it. There is still a lot of soft hair that needs to come out, so I'll still be working on him.

I'm so glad you guys are talking about this. My mom's got a book that describes it but she hasn't found anyone locally that can show her how to do it - so she's worried she'll mess it up. Do any of you have any before and after pictures? I'm 5 mths old and my hair's getting a little thicker, so she really wants to get started. She tried it a little to see I how I'd react - I didn't mind it, I slept too! I'll tell her to get the name of the book and tell ya'll.
