 | | | | Hey gang! Back when I was a teenager my family lived in a rural part of Kentucky. Lots of distance between neighbors and most were farmers or horse breeders. The piece of property next to ours was for the most part uninhabited, except for a few times a year. It was owned by Barnum & Bailey and they would on occassion house animals there. We had elephants and even a giraffe one time. There were big cats, minature ponies, just a wide variety of animals. They were good if infrequent neighbors and always indulged my curiosity. From here the story gets kinda muddled. The cow of an influential farmer was killed...by something with claws and sharp teeth. He insisted it was one of the big cats, B&B insisted none had gotten free. Remember it was a rural area and we had other predators, although it was rare for them to go after something as large as an adult cow. The story then took on mythical or urban legend proportions. Supposedly it was a black panther that got away and was never caught, the proof offered up was the sounds of a baby crying in the woods at night. Apparently a black panther can make a noise like that. I never saw a black panther there, nor did I ever know of one of the big cats to go missing, but the man had influence and with applied pressure from county officials B&B sold the land shortly after that. I did and do have mixed emotions about the entire thing. While it was incredible to see these magnificent creatures up close there was a sadness in their eyes that made me feel horrible. They were treated well by those who cared for them, but I knew they would be much happier in their natural environment. | | | | |
