Gracie, our newest hav, would like to talk about mats, how to get them out when she can not stand to be brushed!!!! She is 15 weeks and only snaps if she sees a brush or a comb. She has bad mats on her bottom and hips but isn't letting mom work on them. The picture with this post is me, big brother Teddy who doesn't seem to mat. Mom will add Gracie soon. She is black and White.

Hmmmm...Wish I had a good solution for you. Brisby is partial to his puppycut, so the hair never gets long enough to mat....there must be others out there dealing with this issue though - lets hope they chime in!!
Oliver

Got to find that- sqeaker!

Louie gets mats under his armpits (strange, I know) but I also just bribe him to let me comb them out. another trick that works is do it when they are really sleepy at night and can't fight back well.
Khaki (In Loving Memory)

Just try to- resist me!

I had the same problem with Khaki...I used a steel tooth comb, and she wasn't crazy about it, but she let me comb the mats out. Someone else recommended a product that you spray on...I didn't get it, and can't remember the name of it...it's a professional grooming product called ice on ice or something like that...someone else may know exactly what i'm talking about. I was going to get it if I couldn't get the mats out, but I was able to.

When Oliver was a puppy we tried something like Ice on Ice but it made the tangles worse. They came out easier when we didn't use any type of a conditioner. Luckily he out grew getting a lot of mats once he lost his puppy coat
Good luck

I was like this as a puppy... hated to be combed, and I also matted under my "armpits". Mom used to comb me 6 or 7 times a day, for just a few minutes at a time, but she INSISTED on doing it. I got lots of praise, and if I got a little mouthy, she'd spray Bitter Apple on the comb and her hands. I got used to it in time, and now mom just combs me out once a day and I don't complain at all. Make sure you are completely mat free before a bath or walking in the rain... water makes those mats get even tighter and harder to comb out.

Santiago

Whatever you do,- do it full out.

The biggest help for us was a comb with rotating tines. It's a steel comb, but the tines spin to help them pass through without getting snagged. I don't know what I'd do without it. Santi also doesn't like grooming on the behind or back of legs. But eventually he submits to it, because he's learned I'm not going to give up!

There was a really bad stage for mats with us, I think when the undercoat (Santi's is really curly) was growing in. So if you're at that stage, it should get better.

Also, be sure you get the "seed" of the mat out--that little kernel of knotted hair. If you leave that in the fur it will make it mat again.

Good luck!

When Ricky was a puppy we used Cowboy Magic.

He doesn't mat now but we use EQyss Premier
Cream Rinse: Formerly Known As, "Cloud Nine".
It leaves Rickys coat feeling GREAT and it's
supposed to work well on mats! All EQyss
products can be used on us humans as wellsmile
