Just wondering how the rest of you decided to get a Havanese? I came upon the breed purely by chance. I hadn't even heard of them before....a co-worker found a puppy wandering around her neighboorhood and was telling me about it one day...describing the dog as a small one who looked like "chewbacca." i got on the akc website and started looking at all the different breeds it could be...lhasa apso, shih tzu, etc...and i discovered the Havanese. Because I have young children, it sounded ideal for our family! Khaki is a mix (the result of an accident at the breeder's house), and I was unsure whether to get her or a purebred...so i researched the bichon and saw that the havanese and bichon are from the same family, and they seemed really similar in character traits. She is such a joy! I'm so glad I discovered these funny little dogs.

One of my 4year old patients told me that they had a new dog. I knew he had a special needs older brother so that caught my attention. I knew it had to be a special bred for that mom to let a dog in the house. Once she told me all about the bred I was hooked. It was just what I was looking for. So I reasearched, found a breeder (locally- luckily) and now have Teddy. He is such a joy!!!!

My neighbor had a litter about 17 years ago. Someone asked me if I ever heard of a havanese. Not wanting to sound dumb I said Id seen them b4. Well I went over to see these little puff balls and became hooked. They were the most adorable things I'd ever seen. Every single one was black. Our baby looked like a black teddy bear. So that would be his name. Teddy. My kids were 1 and 3 when we got him. He was my baby too. He followed me everywhere. When I came home I got showered with loves. He passed away 2 years ago and I still cry when I think of him. We now have another hav - Lexi soon to be 2 and a giant golden bundle, Sammy and golden retriever. I will never be without a havanese.

I wanted to get a small dog but only knew about the breeds you come across pretty much everyday. So I searched the internet to see what other breeds there are. I happened to come across Chester's breeder's homepage and it said that they currently had puppies. So I called, made an appointment to "just have a look", drove up there and ... instantly fell in love with the breed and Chester in particular (I was sitting on the floor surrounded by eight gorgeous, four-week-old puppies and their beautiful and gentle mother - Who can resist that?). Immediately signed a contract and went back to pick up the little man six weeks later. smile

My mutt passed away 3 years ago at 16 years and my English Springer Spaniel passed away last year at 15 years. I was never going to get another dog. Then I was becoming very lonely. So I was set on getting an English Bulldog. I was having alot of trouble finding a breeder close by. Then I went to a local dog show and saw my first Havanese. The decision was made there, however I must admit I went and researched and researched more. I am now friends with local havanese owners and cannot believe how wonderful the dogs are. I also am hoping to do Pet Therapy with them, and apparently the breed is wonderful in this environment.

I was looking for a small dog to keep both me & my mother company. My mother has Alzheimer's so it had to be a small breed. I searched the shelters and as we all know small dogs are just not to be found. I picked up a book & started reading the more I read the more I thought about a Bischon, King Charles, Havanese & Papillon. I then picked up a pet magazine that has Breed Rescue Groups listed-there was a Bischon Rescue number listed so I called. The wonderful lady was willing to listen to me and what I wanted. She told me-Have you thought about a Havanese-calmer that the Bischon-she gave me the name of another wonderful lady who had a 3 year old hav she was looking to place. Mom & I went to her house & the rest is history. I fell totally head over heels in love the minute I saw Miss Paige. I knew she was mine that night. She came to live with us in Jan 2006 & she is my rock, my anchor and my best friend. When the time comes we will add another Hav to our family because as you all know You Can Never Have just One Hav-they are a wonderful breed & additcting LOL.

I spent over a year researching small to mid-sized breeds. I was having trouble deciding - they all seemed to fall a bit short of what I was looking for. I knew I liked the Chinese Crested, but I wasn't 100% sure. My friend, who trains animals for film and TV, got a Havanese puppy. She asked me to pet sit the pup while she was on location. After a few days with her pup, I was smitten. He was such a joy!

Now I had two choices, the Chinese Crested and the Havanese. Then Vinnie, my heart dog, was diagnosed with cancer. Small dogs were forgotten as we fought for Vinnie's life. When he died, I was devastated. Depression set in. A month later, Pepper walked into our lives. My DH is certain that Vinnie sent Pepper here to heal my heart. If so, then Vinnie was perfect even in this. Pepper has definitely helped to lift my spirits again.

I did some research on breeds that don't shed and are hypoallergenic. I thought I wanted a Bichon but my vet told me that skin problems are very common with them. One day I was watching Barbara Walters on The View. She showed a photo of a havanese. She talked about what a wonderful animal her Havanese was. I looked in the paper and there was one last little black Havanese puppy in my hometown. I went to see him and I was hooked.

when i researched and read about the breed, the words "loyal", "cuddly", "playful but not aggressive", "velcro syndrome" all are appealing to me! they're also sturdy little dog and don't shed, what else can I ask for?! Muffin has been such a joy in our home!
