Can we buy the young pups in the main forums a dictionary? I know we all make typo's from time to time, and maybe don't always think before we hit the "submit" button, but some of those posts have me genuinely concerned as to the quality of the educational system these days! Anyone else feel that way?

I would say I agreed -- if I were more confident in my own spelling and grammar. Thank goodness for the online Webster dictionary. It is my homepage. Ha! At least I take the time to look things up and TRY to get it right. If anyone else is interested it is www.webster.com. I use it daily if not hourly. – Ticker's Dad

BOL @ Dexter! Seriously, I'm with Ticker's dad. I use Webster.com whenever I have doubts, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. When you see things done wrong so often, they begin to look right! My daughter, who is almost 23, participated in UIL spelling and placed 2nd for our district at state a few years ago, which makes me very proud. And her attention to detail developed through all those hours of study, along with her participation and playing of a musical instrument, now serve her well in the business community. I just cannot imagine the types of jobs these kids hope to attain unless they shape up! See I AM an Old Fogey!

MMM. Unfortunately, we really cannot assume that they are pups. I teach college freshman and their spelling and grammar really isn't any better. Sigh*
I am not any better though...I end sentences in a preposition all the time.
Do you think that the nature of posting online might lead to a more relaxed approach to spelling and grammar? Or perhaps IMing and text messaging has contributed to this? (text messaging has its own language that is somewhat bizarre- shorthand for slang, etc. I will never understand what compells people to TM each other- hence I am a fogey. Fogey is a state of mind, not a number. *snort*)
If you look at a lot of posts, they are like IM's- short banter that is pretty much devoid of any content.

Boo I think you're probably right about some of it being due to the nature of online communication, I use abbreviations and ignore little typos myself when posting, and I compose documents and type them all day long, so I should try harder. But some of the posts are almost impossible to understand, even taking that into consideration.

I have got to agree with Mellow, sometimes I have to read something 2 or 3 times before I can understand what they are talking about. I for one can't spell worth a darn, so the Webster.com is something I may/will start using. I think alot of the younger folks don't know how to type by touch, like we were taught in High School, and then just sumit before proof reading.

When I watch my daughter type on the pc she drives me crazy!

Spell check is my best friend. BOL!

I can spell, it's the grammer I have trouble with. I also have a tendency to use commas like there is no tomorrow. (I'm sure there are a lot of errors in this short paragraph!)

I really try not to judge so I'll just grit my teeth but I worry because these are the people who will be running our government someday.
